I guess I'm still a little confused about what our white paper topic will be about. I know we are doing Blu Ray vs HD DVD, but since HD DVD is pretty much finished, I'm still a little confused about what we will talk about in our white paper. As I look at the coursepack it says "A proposal explains an existing problem and propses teh concrete measures, procedures, or steps for rectification, along with an explanation of costs, equipment, personnel needs, and a time schedule". I'm confused about the "problem" and how it connects with Blu Ray. Maybe the "problem", since Blu Ray seems to be the clear winner, would be the cost of having to use Blu Ray technology for the customers, if it is beneficial, dangers, those that bought HD DVD boxes already, etc.. Let me know what you guys thing.

I kind of agree, but I think it may be too late for me to change the topic. If you saw my post in the discussion section, I will not be able to do much work from thursday til monday. However, there are still some problems with Blu-Ray that HD DVD has an advantage over. I think we should be able to capitalize on these parts. Especially since our white paper won't have to be as long as some of the other groups. 1) HD DVD is generally much cheaper than any of the Blu-Ray counterparts. 2) Toshiba has openly expressed that it will not be going to Blu-Ray. I'm not sure of the specifics, but I know Toshiba sells a ton of computers and if they are still supporting HD DVD the format war could continue.

With that said, if you guys decide to go another route that is fine. I will be able to do some work on the proposal probably until 3:00 pm Thursday, but I'm not guaranteeing anything after that. Therefore, someone would have to do my part.

Problems/Research update

I have revised the Problems and Research part of the Proposal.

Problems
There are a lot of problems that now arise since Blu-Ray is the clear winner, which may have a great impact to consumers such as:
- How much will these Blu-Ray entertainment systems cost and will the discs be as affordable as current DVD’s?
- Whether to buy the new technology now or wait until it has become more mainstream?
- Without any competition will the pricing for Blu-Ray technology be fair?

These are just a few of the questions that can be asked when consumers think about purchasing a Blu-ray set top box. The cost of current DVD players has fallen dramatically compared to when it first came out. Blu-ray may end up doing the same, but currently the price of the equipment itself is expensive and the additional discs themselves only make the cost go up. The price might eventually fall after a year or two, so the possibility of waiting until the price drops is a reasonable solution. Especially since regular DVD’s are still popular, cheaper in price, and offer greater entertainment along with digital downloads become more popular everyday. But since there is no one to compete with the Blu-ray technology the costs may remain high for a long period of time,

Research
The official announcement made by Toshiba on February 18, 2008 to discontinue HD DVD technology solidified the win for Blu-Ray. News about the format war can be found on the web through news sites such as CNN, CNET, academic databases, and many additional web resources that are geared towards technology related news. Finding reliable and up to date resources will be a difficult task since the news of HD DVD’s demise has recently happened. Speculation of the future of Blu-ray through the articles researched will provide insight in to the topic, but may differ as more news about Blu-ray itself has been announced.
