Weekly Work LogWeekly Progress Posts: Every week individual will post updates relating to the work they, or their group, have performed throughout the week. These reports should inform the instructor of your progress on the assigned project(s) or should be responses to class readings. These posts should include, at the least, tasks completed, meetings conducted with group (if necessary), any problems encountered, goals for the following week, and goals accomplished throughout the week. Posts should also evaluate individual progress in regards to the timetable established in the proposal. Respond to by using the "add comment function" with your Progress Report in the following manner: write your post in a Word Document (Don't forget to check grammar and spelling) and cut & paste your WWL into the comment space. All WWLs are due on every Saturday by noon. Here's a list of the WWL due dates: Finally, I expect that these posts will be much more substantial than individual musings on the project(s). I would consider writing approximately 250-300 words for each week, which might also include a bulleted list that informs me of your progress and plans for the following week. Have fun. Get rolling. |

This week is the week before Spring Break so we have been a little disorganized, and we have had basically 2 cancelled classes. So my group is getting everything together before spring break. I did one section for the bibliography and so did everyone else in my group. Adam came up with a rough rough draft of the paper. I added my section and comments. I also came up with a rough outline of how I think our whitepaper should layout. We are now all getting on the same page. It has been harder for me since my major is CIT and the rest of my group is ECET and our project is on an ECET subject. Overall though they have explained what we are doing well and I understand must of what they are talking about. I have had to do outside research on the subject to keep up with some of the ideas that the rest of my group has thrown out in our discussions. So now that I have given all my info and input to Adam, he is going to come up with a rough draft of our paper over spring break. While of us go off to a nice destination, Adam will be in Lafayette working on our rough draft. We are all going to try to stay in contact over this week via email.

Subject: White Paper Progress and Future Goals
In this weekly work log, I will discuss:
•The progress I have made on the white paper
•My goals for next week
On Saturday, Sunday, and Monday I researched and wrote my section of the white paper. Then, on Tuesday and Wednesday I edited my section and emailed it to my group members for their suggestions. My group suggested that I shorten my section from nine hundred words to around four hundred words. On Thursday, I wrote the weekly work log and shortened my section to contain about five hundred words. I think my section of the white paper is sufficient, but it could be a little shorter. Also, I looked over the sections of the white paper written by other members and found that we need to decide upon a specific setup for the solutions sections so that it does not look like four different people wrote the paper.
My goals for next week are to:
•Think about possible design styles
•Finish my section of the annotated bibliography
I was able to complete all of my goals from last week. During spring break, I plan on thinking of ways to design the white paper and to find some possible graphs/pictures to include in my section. While I was writing my section of the white paper, I found more sources to use. Therefore, I now need to add more sources to the annotated bibliography and actually write the material on the sources for the bibliography.
Yi Hou Weekly Work Log 8
My main accomplishment of this week was completing the first draft of my part for the white paper project. One interesting struggle that I experienced was the method of looking for the resources for writing my part which is the background and history introduction. During last semester I was performing a similar project for my senior design class and most of the sources I used came from journal publications as well as scientific booklets. However, for the introduction portion of this project with a target audience of mostly non-technical personnel, I had to change my resource types into government publications as well as professional organization publications which have contents that are easier to understand for the general public. Also, I was able to perform a few extra sources searching and provided sources to some very useful and newest technology innovations in the field for my group. During the lecture of the week, I learned the general approaches for performing editing on technical writing including the principles of going from the revision stage with focus on the document as a whole, to the proofreading level with focus on the specific intra-sentence structure and grammatical issues. I believe the knowledge of this editing style is very valuable for my future career which involves lots of technical writings. My plan during the break is to perform a few last revisions on my subcomponent and be ready for the finalization week after the break.

The majority of this week was spent with group discussion and planning of our project. In class on Monday we discussed professional appearance of a paper; text, font, and use of images (charts, pictures, graphs, etc.) were all discussed. Wednesday was with general guidelines and suggestions by Mr. Buchanan as to the progress and development of our paper. The second half of each course was devoted to group time. The class broke off into its respective groups to discuss any plans of action, to assign duties, and to evaluate our progress. My group has assigned various tasks and sub-topics of our paper to each member to perform research and begin construction of our paper. Over spring break, our work will be minimal. However, all those with access to a computer will work on collecting data and brainstorming in their free time. Everyone shall devote their free time to their specific assigned task. Once classes resume, we will begin compiling our data and creating a rough draft. One point emphasized upon was the responsibility of each member to find a few images to better express our points. It appears that for our topic, there are minimal images available. We desire photographs that will show the physical size of certain electronic components with respect to an object of known size, to better express the small size of the components (one point of focus). We are also having a difficult time finding charts displaying these components impact in the consumer and professional market, and so must spend more time searching for these images. I am pleased with the progress of our project thus far, and believe that we are certainly on the right track.

This week was critical because we learned good editing techniques that should be employed in our white papers. The most important lecture came on Wednesday where we learned to edit in a Top-Down fashion. That way the big mistakes get fixed first leaving the minor ones for later.
This past week proved to be very important for my group. We were stumbling over how to get started writing the white paper. We had tons of research and ideas of problems, but were unsure of possible "solutions". After getting an outline prepared and looked over by Mr. Buchanan, I feel as though we are finally headed in the right direction of creating and finishing a decent white paper.
For spring break week I plan to do one thing:
-Begin writing about problems and solutions

- Began rough draft of my section of WP
This week we learned to edit in a top-down fashion to correct major mistakes before worrying about minor errors. Much of our in class time was spent with our groups working on our White Paper. We have decided which members of the group will write the different sections of the report. Caleb will be the main editor of our paper and Brian, Billy, and I will be doing most of the technical writing. My group has finished the outline of the White Paper and we have all agreed to complete our sections of the White Paper over Spring Break. I was unable to get much done during the week because of multiple exams and interviews. Over Spring Break I will be able to spent a significant amount of time working on the my section of "one of the solutions" to our problem.
For Spring Break Week and the following week:
- Finish my section of the White Paper
- Edit white paper for continuity
- Decide on a design format

This week in class my group decided to finalize outlines for the different sections of our white paper. This was an effort to make the different segments seem more uniform and follow the same pattern, while preventing us from getting lost in all of the research.
After finishing our outlines, we set up a time line for over spring break of when everyone should have their part of the paper written. Since I will not have access to a computer over break, my section was due today and has been uploaded to the forum.
When I get back from spring break, Michael and Nick should have their sections completed and I will be able to go through the paper and make it seem more cohesive. While I am editing the paper, Michael will work on the design and Nick will write the executive summary.

This week’s accomplishments:
• Laid out White Paper Structure
• Decided what needs to be completed for the next week
• Annotated Bibliography rough draft
This week not a whole lot was accomplished, but what was will help us get most of everything done this coming week as we flesh and complete out our rough draft for our White Paper. We were able to, with Jason’s help and direction, understand how we needed to address the idea of the problems for the paper and how/what our solutions should look like.
Goals for next week:
• Complete White Paper Rough Draft
The big thing for this coming week, even though it is spring break, is to get our rough draft completed. We still haven’t specified as to who is doing what, but once I post and organize our stuff on the forum on the website, we should be able to easily decide that and get it done.

This week in class we were given time to work in our groups and I think we were able to accomplish a lot. In the beginning of the week we were still a bit lost on what our white paper was going to focus on. We had a rough idea but we didn’t know how we were going to attack our problems. But, by Wednesday we were able to make a rough outline about what we were going to mention within our white paper. We were able to:
•Make an rough outline
•Come up with problems and solutions
•Visualize what needed to be accomplished
This week is going to be rather tough since its Spring Break and even though it seems like we have a lot of free time, sometimes the time goes by fast and you really accomplish nothing. But, since I already have a starting point of what I am going to do, it’s just a matter of expanding and adding some additional information. We still need to distribute some parts of the outline and see who will be doing what which is what we will be working on during Spring Break in order to be prepared with a rough draft when we come back from break.

This week was unfortunately unproductive. Our group has fallen behind our set schedule for the white paper and now it looks as though we are going to have to scramble to throw it together at the last minute. I have personally completed each of my assignments, however as a whole don't even have all of the individual components finished yet. Due to other exams in other classes I did very little last week as far as revising my own work, however I will be doing that over break.
Over break there are a few things to finish up for our project. First, I will be reformatting and correcting a few minor mistakes in our proposal so that we can get an A on it. I was also hoping to put together the parts of the project into a format and to begin making it look nice. Unfortunately, I do not have everyone's parts to do this, so I may be limited in what I can do. I will also be experimenting with publisher, as I have only used it on one previous occasion, several years ago.

This week we started doing more in depth things with the white paper. We started off by writing an outline that would guide us through the division and process of writing the rough draft. We then divided the sections of the rough draft. I will be doing the introduction and conclusion as well as the formatting of the paper. I will have to wait until the other parts are written before I start to write my portions. This will make it easier for the paper to be cohesive. This will be done over break, since I have nothing better to do.

In this weekly work log, I will discuss:
•The progress I have made on the white paper
•My goals for next week
The past two weeks have been very busy. During the week of March 10, I re-edited my section of the white paper, emailed it to the entire group, completed my annotated bibliography, and I made suggestions on other group member’s writings. During the week of March 17, I finished the executive summary, made more suggestions on other group member’s writings, and edited the white paper. On Friday, I turned in the white paper, which was a big relief. I found the in class suggestion session to be beneficial because our white paper had mistakes that none of my group members would have noticed. It was nice to have others point out different possible designing ideas. I did not do any class readings because none were assigned.
My goals for next week are to:
•Read the class readings
•Brainstorm for the next project
The next project requires writing for a real life client. At this point, I have no ideas. Therefore, I hope to have at least one idea by the middle of next week. Also, I am happy to be finished with the white paper and hope that the next project goes just as well.

This week the white paper was due. Adam did a lot of work over spring break to get a visual rough draft ready. We work on the draft from there. Added some stuff to the draft. I was not present for Monday’s class though, due to car issues on the way back from Florida. I added my comments and revision to what Adam did over spring break. We had a visual critique day on Wednesday. This helped a lot to guide us on what we needed to do to finish up our paper. I took notes on what needed to be fixed. Then I was in charge of making all those changes and sprucing up the cover page. I did that Wednesday after class. I also was in charge of getting the final project together. I had to print the proposal, annotated bibliography, at least two rough drafts and two final copies. I printed out four copies of the rough drafts. Two where all text and ideas the last two where layout and design with text. I then purchased a manila envelope and paper clipped it all together. This completed the white paper project and this work week.

The past week was extremely frustrating and tiresome for me. Due to some communication miscues we were forced to put together the final paper on a shortened timeline. This resulted in a couple late nights for me, compiling everyone's work together. However, after I became better accustomed to publisher, the process became a lot smoother. The primary goal for the week was to finish the document, and ensure that it was not of poor quality. I think we accomplished these goals. The peer reviews were particularly helpful, not only because we learned ways to make our papers better, but also because we were able to see other groups works and get a better idea of what did or did not look good. Beyond improving the content of our paper, I think our paper improved a lot from the peer review days.
Next week begins the final project of the year. I have 2 basic goals for the week/weekend. The first is to start the service project and ensure that it is not pulled together so close to the due date this time. The 2nd goal is to complete the required reading for this weekend since we will likely have a quiz on it in the coming week.

This week in ENGL421 has been a very productive one. Our time in class was spent discussing and reviewing our current White Paper Project. We looked at a few examples provided by Mr. Buchanan, and as a class discussed and critiqued each example. Peer reviews were also held this week; our rough drafts were traded with other groups in the class and analyzed for appropriate format. We also reviewed our rough drafts as a class for further suggestions. On Friday, the final submission was due. I am generally pleased with the way ours turned out. It was at first very “wordy” and difficult to follow for someone not already familiar with the problem. After class suggestion, we trimmed down some of the content, and included several pictures and captions to aid in its understanding. The general appearance is also pleasing, I believe. Fonts and borders were chosen to stand out, but not detract from the professional appearance of the document. Now our eyes are set to our next project. This weekend I will think of professional contacts I have, and get in touch with them to see if they have any pamphlets, brochures, and similar documents that they feel need to be updated or given a better structure. Pending approval, I am considering joining a classmate in creating a business proposal; we will create a business or service that we feel is needed here on campus, and make appropriate documents for advertisement.

This was great for our group because we were struggling with what needed changed and where to add content. Working with group one gave us quite an advantage because they really gave us a good review and told us what areas needed work. Our group (5) tried our best to give a good review, but due to the length of group one's paper it was difficult to find items that needed review. On Wednesday, the entire class participated in a design review of the white papers. I believe this was good for a lot of groups, including ours. This week has be a relatively busy week for me. Due to my flu and interview weekend during the spring break, a lot of the work for the white paper had to accomplish during the earlier phase of the week. During Sunday and Monday, my main responsibilities included finalizing the rough draft delivery of my subcomponent and participating in the peer review during the lecture. It was very useful and valuable to learn some interesting suggestions from the other members in the group. During later phase of the week, my main task was to finalize the deliverable component including addition of the image, formatting the source citation and addition of the annotated bibliography. Through performing the project, I felt that I enhanced my group work ability and also gained valuable experience in writing white paper on the field off technical writing. Since I will be attending graduate school soon, I am also hoping that the knowledge I acquired through this project can contribute to the necessary situations during my graduate study such as journal article writing or analysis. An idea I have for the service learning project is to write out a business plan for a small consumer electronics company. There are four people in my class in EET (Electrical Engineering Technology) and the good thing about this project is that it doesn’t apply to EET students alone. The business would be divided up into different sectors, management, projects, finance, etc. A management person could be in charge of the overall operation and write how to structure the business. A liberal arts student could be like an HR person and write how they would structure their part. Engineers would write how they would structure their individual teams. We could then all come together and publish a pamphlet that would show what our company does and how we do it.

This week’s accomplishments:
• Finished Final White Paper

• Turned in the final product
Most all this week was spent dedicated to our White Paper. I was really glad we had the review sessions of our papers, as it helped not only go back over what we had learned about writing and design, but we were able to get input from others from outside the group. I think our paper turned out well because of that and because of our group. It certainly made it harder to write since everything was changing, but I think it still turned out well. I did the design and editing because I like that.
Goals for next week:
• Find a topic for our final project
Over this weekend and into next week, I feel that the biggest thing is to figure out what topic to do the final project on. I think a non for profit organization, such as Habitat for Humanity, would be easy to do since a lot of what they do is through volunteering, so it would be basically just another project for them. Though it wouldn’t be building, I’m sure they would have many other things being worked on.

This week we started our service learning project. We got our groups. My group is still unsure of what we are going to/ who we are going to do it for. We are all going to brainstorm this weekend and try to come up with something by Monday’s class meeting. We also go the quiz that I will do this weekend. I had to do a process analysis paper on instructions. We went over procedures and instruction in class and were assigned this task. It had to be a one page bulleted list. I did my analysis on instructions for making a Long Island Ice Tea. I had a hard time choosing a subject to do my analysis on. So I wanted to make a drink and looked up a drink online. That where I got the idea. Most places make shitty Long Islands. So I decided to look up a Long Island recipe. I found a step by step guide for making a Long Island. I did my analysis on these instructions. I choose what was good about them. It was a short instruction set but it had some good stuff in there. This concludes this work week.

This week was extremely less busy than the past few. I completed the assigned readings, and finished the critique for the instruction manual. Our group also now has an idea for our project. We contacted Habitat for Humanity and they have let us know that they have something we can do.
Over the next week we need to set up an appointment with the people at Habitat so that they can tell us what they need done. At this point we'll be able to begin work. This weekend I will also complete the assigned Final Quiz on the white paper and employment project. Aside from those two things, our group will hopefully finish our service project as soon as possible so that we don't have to worry about it when the semester gets closer to the end.

In this weekly work log, I will discuss:
•What I have accomplished this week
•My goals for next week
This week I have:
•Read the class readings
•Met with my service project group
I read the PW Online reading about designing and writing instructions. This document had some good information. I found the suggestions as to which type of document to write based on the length to be very important. When my group writes instructions, we need to consider the amount of time the readers are going to have to perform the tasks. Also, the part on using active voice and always trying to think about what the reader will understand is an important concept that we are going to use in our instructions. I read the coursepack reading and thought that the explanation about the process of how to write a manual was important. My group met in class and decided that the Earhart dining facility is in desperate need of instructions on how to clean beverage machines. Therefore, we are going to compose an instruction manual on how to clean these machines.
My goals for next week are to:
•Read the class readings
•Start some of the writing for the service project
I was able to meet all of my goals for this week; hopefully, I will be able to do the same for next week. I feel that if my service project group is able to complete some of the writing this week, we will not be crunched for time towards the end of the project.

This week is the start of learning another chapter regarding the design and writing of instruction memo. During the weekend I have gone through the reading for the chapter through the online textbook. Some of the major key aspects that I learned through the reading include the importance of having the sections of background, solution, closing, as well as method and warning in a corresponded sequence on the instruction design. Also, as the instruction writer, one has to consider some very crucial factors such as the audience’s expertise level, time frame, and desire as well as the goal. In addition, I also learned that the tone of instruction should always be put in an active yet concise manner, and display style of the instruction should be well placed with adequate white spacing in order to provide the optimal reading for the readers. During Wednesday’s lecture, we also formed the new group for the instruction memo project, and my group has determined to initiate a project of writing instruction memo regarding the use and clean-up procedure for the drinking machines in Earhart Dining Court. The motivation behind this project is to facilitate new employee’s learning process of clean-up for these machines, which can minimize the unnecessary time and accidents that may arise from lack of experience among the new hires. My plan for the weekend is to accomplish the take-home quiz first, and then I am planning to start formulating some basic ideas in advance to our initial outline established during earlier Friday.

This week wasn’t as stressful as last weeks since we completed the White Paper and are now learning about the Service Learning Project. But, we didn’t have much time to rest since we have already started the last project of the semester and have already been assigned our groups. Our group hasn’t come up with a solid idea on what we are going to do but we have a few ideas that we are waiting to hear back from. Along with getting started on the SLP we discussed how to create a good complaint, instructions, and brochures. We will use this gathered information towards the SLP. The project doesn’t seem difficult, but may be time consuming since it’s not about how much you write, but how well you can portray your message to the audience through minimal text.
Things for next week:
• Complete the readings
• Complete the take home quiz
• Find a solid idea for the SLP

This past week we learned about writing and design of instructions and complaint letters. The complaint letter discussion was exceptionally helpful, because I had no idea there was a format to follow when writing a complaint. Also, this week we discussed our last project, the service learning project. Many of us were put in different groups, which I think is a good idea to keep things different and avoid the same group member roles that were developed in the white paper project. Thus far my group has found a topic for the project and we are currently working on an outline to prepare for the remainder of the semester.
For next week, I plan to:
⁃ Stay up-to-date on the readings
⁃ Finish the quiz

This week was a bit short. We got our new groups and exchanged info. We don’t have any really solid ideas but we put an ad out. Other than that we haven’t done much. I got the mid semester quiz and will be working on that. In the next week I hope to work a lot on the last project. I think my group will work together well. The faster we get it done the faster we’ll have it off your plates.
• Quiz due Monday
• Work will group
• Come up with project ideas
• Start project communication
• Start project timeline/layout

This week was spent getting ready for our next big project. Groups were assigned, and we met in class to discuss possible ideas. Our group is considering making an adjustment to the assignment (if it is approved), and I believe it is will be a more enjoyable project, simply because it will be more related to what I am interested in. Now that we are past the half way point of this semester, grades are becoming more and more a concern. I believe I am doing well, but will have to confirm.

This week we were put in groups for our service learning project and our group is starting to talk about writing a manual for using surface mount technology equipment that is available in one of our labs that is normally allowed for upper-classman. The reason why it is available for upper-classman is because a student is required to take a certain 300 level class in order to know how to operate the equipment correctly. This manual would allow for under-classman to operate equipment as well as people who come over from the engineering school to use our equipment.

This week’s accomplishments:
• Met Team
• Decided Final Project Subject
This wee not a whole lot was done, but that was expected since we just finished our other project. A lot was learned from class which will help in the project, but right now we are just getting together the ideas of how we are going to do the final project. It should be good, but I will end up just doing the editorial and design work as the other members will be doing all of the instructions and that because of the subject we decided on.
Goals for next week:
• Complete Mid-Term Quiz
• Begin work on Design on Instructions Book and Pamphlet
For next week I need/plan to finish the mid-term quiz, since it is due Monday, and I need to begin some of the ground work on the Instructions Book design so that when the other members finish their parts that they will be writing, I can just plug in the content and be done. This way we can be done as soon as possible and have one less thing to worry about.

This week we began the service learning project after turning in the White Paper Project. A small assignment that we had this week was an instruction analysis. We found a set of instructions and analyzed them for good and bad qualities. I did a set of instructions for building a solar shed. It was overall pretty good, but there were several aspects about the instructions that could be improved, such as the text on the pages should always be in the same spot on the page.
In our group for the service learning project, we settled on contact the Lafayette Habitat for Humanity for a project. Caleb has a contact within the organization, so we feel that we are off to a pretty good start.

We just started our really working on our Service Learning Project. We communicated via email Monday after class and furthered our idea for the project. Then we met Wednesday before class and composed our proposal. This weekend we will be making our contacts for our project. We choose to make a flyer and brochure for Triple XXX Family Restaurant and Wolf Park. In class we had to bring a brochure for Wednesday. I found one on the State Library and presented it as my group’s worst brochure. I finished the exercise in class and plan on trying to contact our clients this weekend and getting some information to use on our project.

This week was the first week our group really started working on the final project. We have delegated tasks for the proposal and are on track for finishing it on time. Also, this week we learned about instruction writing, brochures, and proposal writing. Instruction writing was important because this is the method of writing we will be doing for our Service Learning Project. Brochures were also important because I learned formatting issues as well as good design techniques for future reference. Lastly, we briefly delved into proposal writing. This topic is interesting because of the way companies "push" society for certain policy issues.
For next week, I plan to:
-Continue with the readings
-Create the proposal for the SLP

This week in class we discussed brochures and policies. We were to analyze a brochure and using the slide’s “Do’s and Don’ts” critique the brochure we chose. In class, we got in to our SLP groups and discussed the brochures we chose and presented the best and worst brochures within our group. Our group has decided on what we will be doing for our SLP. The employer is starting up again so this is a good opportunity for us to come up with something new, whether it is a brochure and/or instructions, for them to use. This weekend and for next week:
• Complete the analysis of the policy
• Complete readings
• Review next week’s calendar
• Continue to work on SLP

This week primarily involved getting set for the service project. My group already has decided on our project, we will be working with Habitat for Humanity to create a 5-year plan book. While most of the book has already been done, or is currently being done by professionals, our job will be to create inserts that can be presented to different groups. These will be something of a cross between a flier and a brochure. We will be creating up to 4 of these inserts.
Next week we will begin work on our service project. We hope to meet with the people at Habitat on Tuesday to further find out exactly what we will be responsible for, and to then begin work. If this meeting time does not work out, we will meet on Thursday instead. We will also work on our proposal memo and have that ready to turn in by the time it is due next week. Finally, I will be working on the policy assignment due on Monday over the weekend.

In this weekly work log I will discuss:
•The progress I have made towards the service learning project
•My goals for next week
Throughout this week, I have been busy working on class assignments and the service learning project. On Monday, I turned in my take home quiz and my analysis of the instructions; also, I helped write the proposal for the service learning project. On Tuesday and Wednesday I completed an analysis on a brochure relating to Osteoporosis and researched what possible instructions relating to cleaning drinking machines might look like. On Friday, I read what policy writing entails. I was surprised that policy writing is starting to become an entire new group of writing because I never thought it was any different from a formal memo. Also, I finished my section of the proposal and emailed it to all of my group members.
My goals for next week are to:
•Complete all of the class readings
•Critique my section of the proposal
I was able to complete all of the class readings for this week and plan to do so again next week. Our group plans to turn in our proposal on April 7th. Therefore, over the weekend I plan to make any changes on my section of the proposal that the group suggests and make some suggestions on other group member’s writings.

This week was devoted to discussing strategic layouts of pamphlets and brochures. The colors, use of pictures, relevance of graphics, and intensity of text were all points of the presentations. The general lesson taken was that when creating such documents, you do not need to overwhelm the reader with information. You must simply grab the reader’s attention, and direct him or her to where they can find more information. Outside of lecture, our group has been discussing our project and assigning duties. We plan to be able to compile our materials into a rough draft by Monday. I will be finding the schematic for our particular instructional brochure, and writing the construction procedures. Little progress has been made on the project this week, but I believe our group has a clear understanding of the direction we wish to take our project. It should be nearly complete by late next week.
