Blog 10 - Borat
The very first time I ever saw Borat was on the opening night in the theaters. At the time, I was unaware that this was a mocumentary. I only thought it was a hilarious film that made fun of the American people for their biased views. The second time I ever saw Borat was tonight, and because I have already been through my English 106 course, I was able to watch this film in a whole new perspective. Even more, the presentation the other day aloud me to catch some of the things that I only laughed at the first time, but did not give much thought too. What I found particularly fantastic was the way Borat was able to get everyday Americans to voice their opinions on certain subjects. Even more, some of the people turned out to only agree with Borat for their own benefit. One example was at the car dealership when Borat was looking for a car with a “pussy magnet”. When he decided on the Hummer, Borat asked the car dealer how much damage the vehicle would suffer if it ran into a group of Gypsies. The funny thing was that the car dealer actually answered him. He said it depended on how hard he wanted to hit them, then told him thirty five miles per hour would be sufficient. It is absolutely ridiculous what people will do to make money. The other example that I found, the presenter in class also had a clip of it, and this was at the gun shop. When the Borat asked the salesmen which gun would be best to shoot a Jew, he actually answered. What is scary is that the salesmen would have probably sold the gun to Borat if he would have been an American citizen. I have seen this in life a lot, although not to this extent. At many businesses, I sometimes see the workers telling a customer that a more expensive item is better than a cheaper one when sometimes this is completely untrue. I once remember a customer at my very own job as for bees wax and when I found it, the price was around seven dollars. My manager stepped in and gave the customer a secret about wax rings for toilet bowls doing the same job. That is what I enjoyed about my job: the workers want what is best for the customer, not the store. Many businesses these days are the complete opposite. Another main part in Borat I want to point out is American’s view of escorts. When Borat invited an escort to a upper class dinner party, he and his escort were kicked out and the hosts of the party threatened to call the cops. I find it funny how we can judge so quickly without giving someone a chance. This is very similar to the cowboy who claimed he feared that ever Muslim looking person carried a bomb with them. Humans are naturally prejudice and I think this film did an excellent job on presenting this issue in a unique, but funny way.
