Sherman's Search

What was Sherman’s March really about? Ross tells us that it is about an adventure with ladies of the south. The question is, is Sherman’s March really about ladies of the south of is there something more to it then some kind of masculine march for women. I believe that this movie is really a documentation of what it is like getting over a love that you are not ready to get over yet. At the beginning of Sherman’s March we learn that Ross has just broken up with a girlfriend. This girlfriend was not just any kind of girlfriend it was the first true love that Ross had in his life. These are the type of relationships that are by far the hardest to get over compared to other types of relationships. Everything that Ross does in the documentary is directly related to the break up with his girlfriend. This is part of the reason that everything that Ross does is so unfulfilling. Everything that Ross does do is in an attempt to fill the void that his old girlfriend left him. He attempts to fill this void through his conquering of ladies of the south. By avoiding the real problem that Ross has, Ross never becomes any better and just ends up doing things in a cynical type of fashion. What Ross is looking for in all these women that he meets and that he follows around is his ex-girlfriend but the fact is that all these new women are not his ex-girlfriend and they do nothing to help him get over the loss of his ex-girlfriend. The interesting thing is how obvious it is that he is just using all these other women as fillers. When Ross tries to explain why he is attracted to any of the women that he “falls for” while in the south he never has really good reasons. When he tries to convince that lawyer that she should love him its very obvious that Ross does not really want the love of the lawyer he just wants the love of his old girlfriend. This whole situation is kind of like trying to put a triangle shaped toy into a circle shaped hole. Maybe you can pound the toy in if you try really hard but pounding it in will ruin the triangle shaped toy and it will also ruin the hole. Once you finally squeeze the toy in it will never fit right. It will never satisfy its purpose. It will just be awkwardly stuck in a hole where it does not belong only because such force was used to pound the shape in with the first place. When Ross is trying to convince the lawyer he is trying so hard to pound the shape but the fact is that the shape just does not fit. What Ross really needs to do is needs address the fact that he has such a problem with his old girlfriend and stop trying to fill her void by women who are quite frankly irrelevant. She
