Life a Debt a Theme Through Time

in

In the documentary that we just watched called “Life and Debt” some interesting points were brought up. It seems like to me that “Life and Debt” brings up the negative effects that come along with globalization. What makes this interesting is that we have many times before said never again yet we continue to do it till this day. What I am talking about is pushing beliefs and systems on to other people. Throughout history this keeps happening again and again. In more recent history this has happened with religion. When western Europeans came to America they thought they could save the Indians by converting them to Christ. The same thing happened when the missionaries ventured to Hawaii. The intentions of course were good by the Europeans who came to the new world; they thought by converting them they would guarantee them a spot in heaven. The truth is there was nothing wrong with the Native Americans in the first place, they had a good lifestyle and a very complex religious system. The only thing the Europeans brought to the Native Americans was smallpox and guns. Not only did we try to convince the Native Americans that Christianity is the way to go, we killed them if they did not agree with Christianity and the European way of life. After this happened we all said never again. In this past century, an extreme example, but an example none-the-less, Hitler created a party that would force anyone not Aryan and anyone that did not have the same belief system as Hitler, to give up their lives. Hitler went on to kill many people in what is regarded as one of the worst events of all time, but was this much different from how we treated the Native Americans? Both Hitler and the Western Europeans had the exact same belief, the belief that they knew what was best for the rest of the world and that if anyone disagreed they deserved forced conversion or death. After Hitler we said never again. We may not be going out and killing people but the same idea that lead to the attitude of Hitler, of Stalin, of the Western Europeans and of the Romans, the attitude that no one knows better than you, anyone that is not you is a barbarian, less than human, is the prominent attitude among a lot of Americans. This is especially evident in government and big businesses. The Iraqi war is a perfect example of “Western culture coming to the rescue”. It is true that Sadaam Hussein was a horrid man and committed many atrocities but we did not get involved with Hitler until we were attacked first. Even though Sadaam was just a monster, we really do not have the right to go and save the day in Iraq and ignore all of Africa that is having genocide. Have you asked yourself recently what happened to Osama Bin Laden? He was the man who attacked us yet we spend all our time in a country that never attacked us. This however hits on another corruption. The whole issue of the war for oil will not be discussed here. What happened in Jamaica is along the exact same line as everything else. As Americans we think we have the greatest economic system in the world and we need to help out poor old Jamaica. If we would completely leave Jamaica alone and stop pressuring them to be little American maybe they could get themselves out of their problems.
