Blog 12: Finally Done!

Starting a new business is a risky chance and can take a lot of unexpected turns. The benefits of a successful business can be great, but a failure can be a huge financial blow. The film “Startup.com” directed by Chris Hegedus and Jehane Noujaim is a documentary about two men that decided to start their own internet website that would potentially turn them into very successful businessmen. The internet site they start is called govworks.com after much debate and would be government website to allow citizens to pay taxes online and also parking tickets.

Blog 4: Night and Fog

One of the most powerful films we watched this year, or films that I have ever seen for that matter is “Night and Fog”. This is a documentary that captures the horrific images of the holocaust’s systematic extermination of millions of innocent people. There is never going to be a film that will fully capture how horrible it actually was, but this film does a good job showing some of the horrible images and really demonstrating a greater understanding of the terrible tragedy. This film is made with a voice over through out the whole film, but is told in German.

Blog 11: The Dark Side to a Sunny Place

When someone says they went to Jamaica, immediately everyone listening gets jealous and wishes they had just returned from a great vacation like that. This is because Jamaica is known for having warm weather, breathtaking views and a guaranteed good time. This is coming from the people that fly into Antigua Bay. The people over in Kingston are singing a different tune. It is sad to think how some people are living in the same country people go to vacation.

Blog 10: The Truth Behind Lucy

The term bisexual and lesbian are confusing words to be used when describing a young adult. For a teenager, this is a time when a person tries to find their true identity and try new things out. This is no exception for some people trying to find their sexuality. Lucy is thought to be a bisexual by some people, lesbian by others, and some just think she is going through a phase. In my opinion I take a completely different approach to this topic. I feel that Lucy is heterosexual but due to circumstances beyond her control she is confused and exploring new ideas.

Blog 9: Role Model or Crazy?

When a person calls someone crazy, or says that a person is losing their mind because they are doing something they love, they are the crazy person. “Grizzly Man” is a documentary produced by Werner Herzog that shows the life of Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell is a man that left everything to follow his dream of living amongst some of the most dangerous creatures. For thirteen years Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend lived in the wild documenting the lives of wild grizzly bears in their natural environment.

Blog 8: Marching to the Beat of Immaturity

In class we watched a film called “Sherman’s March” by Ross McElwee. As the title implies it is clearly a movie that is going to document the historical events and happenings of the march that was led by General Sherman during the Civil War. As I am sure most people expect, I had no reason to believe this film would be anything less than a factual based documentary that could potentially be educational and interesting.

Blog 7: Sherman's Boring March

Ross McElwee is a man that has absolutely no business directing any type of film, under any circumstances. His film “Sherman’s March” is one of the most boring, drawn out, pointless films I have ever had to watch. At first when I heard we were watching a film called “Sherman’s March”, I immediately thought a documentary about the march of a southern war general could potentially be very boring, but went into it with an open mind thinking it could be interesting at the very least. Once the film started playing, I had no idea what I had gotten myself into.

Blog 6: Man of deception

When the words strong, leader and passionate are thrown around, more times than not the person being described is a positive figure. These terms are used to describe heroic figures that are always looking out for the interest of the little man and trying to make a positive impact on the world. When these words are used to describe a person that is pure evil and out to make the world worse, only bad things will follow. Hitler is the perfect example of how all of those words apply to him but does not fill the role of hero in the slightest bit.

Blog 5: The Not So Awful Truth

Michael Moore does so much more in his short film “The Awful Truth” than just change one transplant policy at Humana. I am not trying to say that this is not a significant achievement, but I do believe that he achieves an even bigger achievement every time this film is viewed. Michael Moore does an excellent job of turning this film into a controversial topic that is stirring emotions around America.

Blog 3: Is Michael Moore as bad as he seems?

Michael Moore is controversial, rude and takes every situation to the extreme. His stand up comedy/TV show “The Awful Truth” is no exception to this. He shows little to no respect for the Public Relation worker for the insurance company Humana. He completely ignores all social norms by bringing a funeral to an insurance company’s building, for a person still living. This is not only making everyone around him uncomfortable, he is making himself look like an ignorant jerk.
