Blog 12 - Nigel Tufnel

I mentioned in my previous blog how I regretted choosing the documentary I did after watching This is Spinal Tap and it still holds true. If I were to write my paper over, I think I would specifically focus on Nigel Tufnel, the lead guitarist and without a doubt the most unique of the band members. Martin Di Bergi seemed to have a close connection with Nigel, or perhaps just found him as intriguing as I do. My paper would primarily deal with the homosexual tendencies I feel Nigel possesses. I think the first time I noticed anything odd was after David St.

Blog 11 - This is Spinal Tap

Tonight I watched Martin Di Bergi’s documentary, This is Spinal Tap and I will be completely honest, I entirely regret choosing the documentary I did for my second paper. Every second of this film was absolutely amazing. The entire bad is exactly what I would think of when I imagine a stereotypical eighties rock and roll band. The band members (actors if you will) were intriguing and I can see exactly why Martin Di Bergi would have loved this band. I enjoyed how Di Bergi filmed this mocumentary and I would not change a thing about it.

Blog 10 - Borat

The very first time I ever saw Borat was on the opening night in the theaters. At the time, I was unaware that this was a mocumentary. I only thought it was a hilarious film that made fun of the American people for their biased views. The second time I ever saw Borat was tonight, and because I have already been through my English 106 course, I was able to watch this film in a whole new perspective. Even more, the presentation the other day aloud me to catch some of the things that I only laughed at the first time, but did not give much thought too.

Blog 9 - The Inconvenient Truth

Speaking of exaggeration in my last blog, it has made me think of another documentary I recently watched in an attempt to find one suitable for my second essay. About two or three years ago I went to a free viewing of The Inconvenient Truth at a local church. I had no previous knowledge of what the film was about but went with a friend anyways as company. Upon watching this film, I did not know exactly what to believe and I really just watched it without any real plan on gaining knowledge. I almost forgot about the film until a South Park episode I watched.

Blog 8 - March of the Penguins

During class today there was a presentation about March of the Penguins and it kind of sparked my interest so when I came back to my dorm, I decided to download it. I remember when it came out in theaters and a group from my graduating class went on a trip to see it and write about it. Seeing as I was not in that class and I did not feel like spending money on a documentary I would rather watch on the discover channel, I never had the chance to see it. I do love penguins, however, so at last I have seen it.

Blog 7 - Sherman's March

Well today we finished watching what I thought was probably the most ridiculous attempt at a documentary I have ever seen: Sherman’s March by Ross McElwee. In the beginning, Ross walked back and forth sweeping what looked like an empty apartment in a city high rise. He told the audience that this documentary was going to follow William Tecumseh Sherman’s march through the South. He made a comparison between himself and Sherman because both of them tried hard and something, and even when they succeeded, people viewed them as a failure.

Blog 6 - Triumph of the Will

We recently watched part of Triumph of the Will, a documentary by Leni Riefenstahl, during class and were told to describe how it made us feel. We were also asked to describe how Hitler would make us feel if we knew nothing about the history of his life. It was actually kind of amazing when I thought about it: The huge crowds gathering to see this short, stocky dark haired man speak. But as I analyzed it further, I realized why his soldiers were so patriotic to their country. Hitler was a talented speaker and was able to stir up emotion in everyone.

Blog 5 - Invisible Children

Tonight I decided to download and watch Invisible Children and it was absolutely empowering. Every word of every child touched my heart. It was almost as if I made the journey to Sudan and saw it myself. The three guys who made this movie claimed that their lives were changed forever (“Rude Awakening”) and I can see why. While watching it, many parts reminded me of the Holocaust and Alan Resnais’ Night and Fog. Alan Resnais believed that the Holocaust could not be reenacted or retold for anyone to completely understand.

Blog 4 - Topic for my paper...

Well I have finally finished reading Jamaica Kinkaid’s Lucy, and honestly I do not know what to think. Should I like or dislike Lucy?

Blog 3 - Lucy Gray, or, Solitude

Today we were put into groups and given one or more poems by William Wordsworth’s Lucy poems. Our group got “Lucy Gray, or, Solitude”. This poem was not very difficult to read and also not very difficult to analyze and interpret. The first three stanzas were a background for the poem. The way our group interpreted them was simple. The narrator heard that of a young girl named Lucy who was very sweet and loved to play outside. However, Lucy had no friends and was a very solitary child.
