Lucy
Jamaica Kincaid is a terrific author who wrote a compelling novel about a teenage girl who moved to New York to go to nursing school and be a nanny. Lucy grew up in the West Indies with her mother, father, and two brothers. She was not a quiet person by any means and she also does not seem to have morals. Lucy does what she wants, when she wants.
Lucy first came to New York and butted heads with a lot of people because she was not the common nice little girl. She spoke her mind whenever she chooses, to whoever she chooses. She is a wild child but she is very good with the children she is babysitting. They are always being cared for and they were never in harm.
I think Lucy is a little too selfish and self centered for her own good. When the mother of the family wanted to take her to Lake Michigan she did not want to go but she really had no choice. She had never been on a train before and was not grateful to be on one now. When they get to the small town in Michigan she does not like the people there for the way they look or the way that some of them talk. She insisted that the mother was having an affair with her friend that she grew up with just because they were so close. The children wanted to go to the lake so Lucy had to take them on the fifteen minute walk across the meadow and through the woods. When they were on the walk she complained about how long the walk was and how tired she was. On the walk the little children did not even complain about the elements. Lucy also said it was ridiculous about how bad the bugs were in the woods and that it is terrible that they have to do this just to go swimming.
When she moved in to an apartment with her friend they began to grow apart. Lucy did not care what her friend thought and often did things that she knew would make her angry. Lucy had a boyfriend who was her roommate’s coworker. Often times her boyfriend would wait in Lucy’s room because they did not get along. Lucy would often come home late; she met this guy at the camera store and decided to go to his house and sleep with him before she went home to her boyfriend. She did not care the effect and thought that it was a perfectly fine thing to do. Lucy started to get a awkward feeling when she would come back and her boyfriend would be in the living room with her roommate. She later found out that her roommate and boyfriend were now together and that they are going to get an apartment together when the lease runs out. This was a shock to Lucy but it was a taste of her own medicine.
