When Timothy Treadwell would set up his camp he would try to keep it hidden as much as possible. There were multiple reasons for this, first was to make sure poachers would see him and so he could sneak up on them and protect the grizzly bears. There was never any poaches in the thirteen year documentary, there was only one time in the movie where they showed visitors who banked near where he was, but it just looked as if they were sightseeing. The other reason for him trying to keep his camp hidden was the law that stated you had to move your camp one hundred feet or more from the current camp at least every two weeks. There were many times when a Department of Natural Resources helicopter would scan the area he was camping and Timothy would have to scramble to hide so he would not be spotted and forced to move.
During the time that Timothy Treadwell was not deep in the Alaskan wilderness, he would go to elementary schools to try to teach the young children that grizzly bears were harmless and that they just received a bad reputation. I do not think this was totally a good idea. He could be giving the false impression that they are like dogs and could be approached, when they are really dangerous animals that have been known to eat humans when hungry enough. I also feel that it is good to have firsthand experience with grizzly bears if you are going to go to elementary schools and teach little children about them. Grizzly bears are not a subject or topic that is often covered in depth in the education system today, when they are a protected animal. I believe that Timothy Treadwell was doing a good thing by teaching today’s youth about grizzly bears, the only problem I have with what he was doing is that he should have been teaching to a more mature audience. Middle school or high school would have been a better choice of audience for the topic of grizzly bears. They would understand that bears are not approachable and they could also understand the context that he is teaching them. This would not be putting any false ideas into the brains of the audience that the bears were something less than they are, born killers.
Timothy Treadwell was killed by a bear on his thirteenth journey to Alaskan forest. There was a drought and the bears were not able to feed on the fish, because they were not running upstream to spawn. The bears became overly hungry and unpredictable. The one bear Timothy did not like came through the brush and attacked him. He tried to fight off the bear with a frying pan but it was no use. His girlfriend also grabbed a pan to try to help him fend off the giant grizzly bear, but she was also killed by the beast. This is the very reason why I did not like the fact that he was selfish enough to take his girlfriend with him into the deep Alaskan forest.
