First 100 Pages of Lucy.
My first impression of a nineteen year old au pair from the West Indies is a nice soft spoken person. This is not the case with Lucy. Actually, it is pretty close to the exact opposite. She is quite a ball of fire with her selfish thought process, her loose lipped speaking, and careless attitude towards life in general.
She was raised with a mother and father who thought highly of their three sons who were younger than Lucy. The sons received lots of praise and were told that they would go on to do great things with their lives, unlike Lucy who was told that she would just have a happy life. This fueled Lucy’s fire and made her act out even more later on in life. She went to a boarding school where she was taught British ethics and history. Much of the content she was made to learn had no bearing on her or her lifestyle. She though this was nonsense and could not wait to get out of the awful country. She went to the United State to become an au pair for a year and Study nursing during the evening at a local university. Which she soon came to find out she did not like people enough to care for them or be around them as much as a nurse would be.
Lucy went on an overnight train to the great lakes to stay in a cottage with Mariah, the mother, and the four children she would be taking care of. She had no ambition to see the country side or the great lakes for that matter, but she went without arguing or suggesting something else because it was her job and that is what she was getting paid to do. Lucy often judged people by first impression or how they looked. She did not like Mariah’s childhood best friend or her family friend at the lake because of the way they talked and how they looked. While she was there she complained to the children the entire twenty minute walk through the woods from the cottage to the lake. None of the children complained except the smallest whose legs became tired after part of the walk.
Lucy finally finds a friend who is trying to find her own identity also. Her name is Peggy and she lives with her parents, she also hated the lifestyle her parents made her live. They sit in the park and sort through men that they might like to talk to, and then they ask them to have coffee and further evaluate them. Lucy and Peggy like to experiment with drugs, men, and anything else that amuses them. They both live a reckless lifestyle on the weekends when they usually meet up in the park. Lucy meets a guy named Paul at a party Peggy takes her to. Paul is Peggy’s coworker, and she doesn’t like Paul and also doesn’t want Lucy to see him. While Lucy is with Paul, she is constantly thinking about other guys she has kissed or done other things with. She even thinks this as she is in his bed with him.
