So in class a fellow peer of mine did a presentation on Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. She showed a clip of the movie. I really forgot how funny it was. Revisiting the film has made me realize how racist it was, but I understand he was not serious in making the film. I think it is a bit funny that people have been offended by it. I feel like certain groups go out and try to convince people they should be offended by a movie like this. I really have no problem. Maybe if I were Jewish, a Kazakhstanian citizen, or even a woman I may have been offended by it, but I am not so I wasn’t. I read somewhere that this movie was banded in a majority of the Arab world. I think that is crazy that one man could create a movie that would cause an entire region to band it. I am sure there are some films though, that are band in the entire western world because they are against the standards protestant values that have been forced upon us. According to Wikipedia Sacha Baron Cohen is being sued 7 different times over the making of the film. Most of those people have no reason to sue Cohen because they were just in the back ground. A lot of people have filed damage charges against Cohen. I think these people are just trying to get free money. They all signed waviors before they were taped to be in this film. Several claim they were lied to about what the films true intentions were. I still do not think they have much of a case. It is a shame that people they can have millions of dollars because they were in 5 seconds of a movie. The president of Kazakhstan threatened to sue Cohen because he made the country look really bad. I had never even heard of the country before the film. If you were the country of Kazakhstan would you rather of never have been heard of or would you rather be misrepresented.
Some of my favorite scenes are when he is taking driving lessons. The guy looks so scared. He actually is one of the people suing Cohen. The amount he wants is one-hundred-thousand dollars He said he was lied to about the nature of the film and that he should have the money because the movie used his image to sell the film in commercials. He did sign a waiver and received a payment of 500 dollars for his role in the film. Another favorite scene of mine is when he is talking to the comedy coach. The guy was explaining to him not jokes. He told Borat a not joke is when you say something and then later you are like not. Borat could just not grasp the concept. It was pretty funny. This is one of the few people in the film that realized during the filming of it that it was just a joke. He thought it was pretty funny as well.
