In class we read the Lucy poems by William Wordsworth. I don’t think Lucy is one particular person in all of the poems. William Wordsworth’s uses her sort of as an idea more than a person. She is given ghostly characteristics in his poems, while having “goddess” like features in others.
William Wordsworth, himself, is very interesting. He has a very peculiar relationship with his sister, Dorothy, which makes me think conspiracy all the way. They are close in age. Dorothy never got married, nor was there evidence of her being in love, in any of the research I did. I think there is a possibility they loved each other a little more than brother and sister. The two of them lived together a lot of their lives. William made references to his sister in some of the Lucy poems. When they were young their mother died, and their father sent William away to school. The two may have had a close relationship that was warped by the passing of their mother, and the separation of the siblings because of William’s departure to school. Dorothy and William did not cross paths again for another nine years. They may had a developed a crush on each other at the time of their reunion. I think there is a possibility that Dorothy was in love with William, and he did not want people to know, so he allowed her to live with him, their entire lives. Dorothy and William were two of five children. They seemed to have a much closer relationship then they had to the other children. This is a conclusion I base on the fact they spent most of their adult lives together. The reason I think William does not love her in return, is because he married. He married his childhood friend, and they had five children together. He also had another daughter with a French woman, whom he had to abandon, because of the French revolution. I also think that William loved her back and that is why he married a childhood friend. It would have been looked down upon by society if he would have married his sister. If that was not allowed then he at least wanted a wife so he could easily dispute people saying he was in love with his sister.
A book on this topic could be written, maybe not using the names Wordsworth or William or Dorothy. If there is not enough information to be written in novel form you could write a movie. The movie could be called Lucy. She would be the main character, and she would be based off of Dorthoy Wordsworth. William’s character could be named Christopher who is his little brother. Their last name could be Prelude which is the title of what is considered William’s masterpiece, The Prelude. They could live in the Swan Cottage instead of the Dove Cottage. It could be in the Pond District instead of the Lake District. I do not know if this is actually the case but would it not be crazy if it was.
