Blog 4: Greed

Stephanie Black’s “Life + Debt” brought a new rise to previous arguments I have heard in the past. As an American, I have heard that so many people hate me and my country for the reason I thought was strictly caused by jealousy. Although the word “greed” has been associated with the American society before, the reasoning I understood from this statement was mainly because we were not willing to give up what we have worked so hard to earn. Of course some of these accusations would come from some of our own actions, for money must come from somewhere. But to this extent of giving just to take more in return had obviously seemed active in banks and in other aspects of our economy but the idea that such a term would be used to tease a country into its death had never occurred to me. And on such a grand scale these loans were not loans but free charges to Jamaica for a normal loan has even the slightest chance of being productive for the customer. But such a harsh statement is not fair to place on only one, for why would Jamaica sign for their own despise? Could such a trade be kind to that of “a deal with the devil?” Easily enough the denial of money and the encouragement of trade tariffs would have avoided such this mess. Of course this path of economical fulfillment would be extended in theory but who would rather be poor than wait? Although they were slaves, Jamaica was still tainted by the glories of the British Empire. After seeing such pleasure and then dream about it night and day as they worked out of fear, they wanted to continue this trend of wealth. Unfortunately for Jamaica their greed caused them to fall for a “get rich quick” scheme, almost like one that we see every day. Both of these powers actions caused by greed only confirms it as the Devil’s advocate, and further more confirms that the human race as a whole is driven by greed in its entirety. Although the amplitude of it varies from east to west, student to employee, habitat for humanity volunteer to real estate agent; greed is in bedded into each of these. I know some of these instances seem to be pushing it and I will agree with that, but not completely for in some cases it is common to see a face of good from someone that is only generated for that sole reason. A volunteer, although good in the idea, sometimes takes such actions not to help others but to push themselves ahead of others in life. Therefore becoming richer in the things life has to offer us, such as money, friends and love. All of these being things that most people live and long for, something someone will do anything for. In some cases it has even been seen to kill for any of these cases and even more. Therefore our mind creating the things we want in life and longing for as much of it as we can.
