Blog 3: Just Another Fairytale

I’m usually not one to watch a movie than say that it was extremely bad, but “10,000 BC" is definitely an exception. A movie about ancient history should not be as random as this movie was. Although most events that took place in this movie did actually occur in the past, the time frame from which each took place was completely blown out of proportion. I do not know the exact amount of time but I believe the directory took over a million years of history and compressed it all into the same year! Last time I checked Woolly Mammoths, Egyptians, and birds that were a mix between raptors and dodo birds did not exist in the same time frame. I guess a lot of it was made up too since I am pretty sure that last animal never even existed. Although I do agree, like most great movies, they should modify the story line a tad to create a suspenseful environment; I do also think they should not follow a fictional path. Maybe changing a small battle or cutting out a certain aspect but nothing like combining so many years of history into one story. I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoy when I am watching a movie with historical background and I realize what events are taking place, their effects on our world, and what will come next. It gives me a sense of intelligence, which is strange because I always hated history class. One thing I did like about the film was how everyone but the Egyptians really did not have much of a clue what was going on. The tribes were confused when the Egyptians raided their villages and took their clan members. The reason I liked this was because it showed the other side of a powerful empire or nation on a small undeveloped society. I feel that knowledge is definitely something our society takes for granted. We forget what it feels like when we enter another less fortunate country. The village had an old woman that could see the future. She saw the attack by the Egyptians many years in advance. For those years until it came they stood guard and waited. It even came to the point that this very vision created prophecy, legend, almost a whole new way of life. Then once they came they wiped out this peaceful society with a sway of their swords; almost creating a whole in history forever. Then of course like most movies of this origin this is when the chosen one will rise against a gigantic army and destroy it from the inside out, killing a supposed ‘God’ that honestly looked like the weakest character in the movie. He did not carry a sword or ride a horse yet everyone feared this nowhere near intimidating man. Either way he is taken down by the magically perfect throw of a spear by our hero and he saves the day and gets the girl. Such an original plot, I know.
