Borat: Who Needs to Grow Up?-Blog 12
Posted April 25th, 2008 by mille228I have been a fan of Sasha Baron Cohen for many years. I have owned and cherished all of the DVD seasons of his hilarious HBO show, ALI G. In this show he plays three characters: Ali G, a British wannabe gangster, Borat, the commonly known reporter from Kazakhstan, and Bruno, a homosexual fashion designer. In this show, the goal is to get a rise out of unexpected people by using extreme humor and inappropriateness. Borat the mocumentary, is just a longer edition of one of Borat's adventures. People who watch this film have very mixed feelings about the film.
War in Iraq Becoming a New Vietnam War?-Blog 11
Posted April 25th, 2008 by mille228The film is filled to the brim with both political content and political intent. The documentary showed how one man used the media’s obsession with his celebrity status to try to get out a political message. From the people they interviewed to the stories they covered, this film was overflowing with political content. However, The U.S. vs. John Lennon also has very high political intent. In big letters on the top of the cover it declares, “From the Studio that Brought You Fahrenheit 9/11,” cueing the audience that it is going to have a liberal political message.
The U.S. vs. John Lennon-Blog 10
Posted April 21st, 2008 by mille228The documentary The U.S. vs. John Lennon covered the political activism of the former Beatles star, John Lennon, and how this eventually led to the United States trying to deport him from the country. By combining lots of archival footage of John from Yoko Ono’s archive, intertwined with interviews from those who knew him at the time, the documentary painted a great picture of a politically charged era. John Lennon’s music provided a perfect soundtrack to the story of how Nixon, advised by Strom Thurmond, tried to deport Lennon on trumped up marijuana charges.
"Making Love" Part Two- Blog 9
Posted April 21st, 2008 by mille228Lucy’s next partner arises when she is introduced to Dinah’s brother Hugh, by Mariah. Lucy is instantly physically intrigued with Hugh, and up to this point in the novel, that is all Lucy needs to engage in a sexual relationship with a man. They do in fact speak a few meaningless words to each other, and nearly instantly engage in sexual activities. Lucy is thoroughly pleased by Hugh physically and speaks of her enjoyment. However, she reiterates the fact that she is not in love with him.
"Making Love"-Blog 8
Posted April 21st, 2008 by mille228In the novel “Lucy” by Jamaica Kincaid, Lucy uses her sexuality to express her independence from her mother and from men. This expression of independence through sex is solely a physical act with her partners, leaving no emotional feelings or attachments with Lucy.
An Inconvenient Truth: Al Gore's Best Accomplishment, Other Than the Internet-Blog 7
Posted April 16th, 2008 by mille228I had heard from many people how convincing Davis Guggenheim's documentary featuring Al Gore, "An Inconvenient Truth" is in proving that global warming is in fact a real threat. After viewing the film for myself, I could not agree more. Despite Al Gore's dull, scholarly, humor lacking personality; his passion for getting the word out about the threat of global warming is very evident and convincing. The documentary follows Al Gore's slide show presentation on global warming that he is been giving for the past few years.
Triumph of the Will: Propaganda at its Finest-Blog 6
Posted April 14th, 2008 by mille228After viewing the documentary, Triumph of the Will, a film by the German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, I was amazed by the propaganda that was displayed by the use of music and cinematography. This film is a compilation of footage from speeches given by Nazi leaders during the 1934 in Nuremberg. Hitler is one of the focal speakers in this film, as well as being an unlisted producer of the film.
Do You Want a Revolution?-Blog 5
Posted April 13th, 2008 by mille228I wouldn't consider myself an avid Beatles fan, however I do enjoy their music when I listen to it. The song "Revolution" is one of my favorite songs that I have heard from the Beatles. This is also one of their more popular songs, which is probably why I am familiar with it. It is upbeat, has a catchy tune, and the lyrics are fun and easy to sing along with. However, after watching the documentary The US vs. John Lennon, I realized the lyrics of this song are so much deeper then I had ever imagined.
Penguins Trump Many Americans in Parenting-Blog 4
Posted April 9th, 2008 by mille228After viewing the documentary, "March of the Penguins" I was moved by the extreme dedication the emperor penguins display in order to raise their young in the frigid environment of Antarctica. “March of the Penguins was first screened in France as La Marche de l'Empereur, with a handful of French actors providing a voice-over in which they expressed the "thoughts" of the penguins; for the American edition, Morgan Freeman was brought in to deliver a more straightforward narration,” stated Mark Deming from All Movie Guide.
Jamaica: Slums in a Land of Paradise or Paradise in a Land of Slums?-Blog 3
Posted April 2nd, 2008 by mille228After watching the documentary Life+Debt, I was very humbled. When the average American hears the word "Jamaica" they would probably be overcome by an image of white sand beaches, sunshine, and pina coladas. Sure Jamaica is home to beautiful beaches and unlimited sunshine, but we seem to forget that Jamaica is an economically struggling nation. Slums, starvation, underpaid jobs and unemployment make up the majority of the country. One full-time worker working for an American factory in Jamaica said she makes 30 dollars in two weeks.
