Computer Intimidation & Unseen Factors

Although it was the overall topic of “Integrating Computers into the Writing Classroom”, I found the most appealing part of this essay to be the exact realization of the more analytical side to computer usage. Students being hesitant or edgy when using computers to create, revise and complete writing assignments is prevalent in any beginning composition course. Remembering back to my first year comp. classes I can say that being new to college was enough pressure yet alone putting our thoughts on a screen to be graded for what they were: words on a screen. Students are afraid of disapproval as well as denial from the Professors that they respect. What’s difficult to comprehend though is the fact that computers run align with how we run composition classes that use the computer as its primary tool.

In regards to the article, “Word Processing in First-Year Comp.”, I was intrigued at the notion that this instructor decided to gather his information on computer usage in the classroom with that of students whom had little or no experience using word processing or a computer at that. It was interesting though to view the student with the least amount of experience go through this instructors rigorous “experiment” and at the end of it all come out as a success still using the Epsons. What other factors though could this instructor have used in order to take his findings and have them used for the good of computer usage? He could have possibly not waited until the fourth week of classes to conduct his initial “experiment.” His final findings lack an initial encounter with the computers if the students had used them in the beginning. There will be a conclusion regardless, but a sound conclusion may lack.
