Sound

So what does computers and composition sound like? Although the readings for this week and the discussions we had in class directly addressed this issue, I have to admit that I still cannot really articulate an answer to the question. I could talk about how the examples provided in the McKee article seem to illustrate how sound can be used in compositions. I could also talk about the benefits of bringing sound into composition assignments and how creating audio assignments can aid in the nurturing of critical thinking skills. Or, I could talk about the development of technologies associated with sound (Gitelman) and how increasing usage of digital songs and the use of transportable music devices like iPods ( “Listening in: Practices surrounding iTunes music sharing” ) are continuously shaping the world we live. But, I think by following that path we are missing one key element to this whole discussion.
Throughout this week we have been assuming that the question “What does computers and composition sound like?” is referring to teachable application or audience response. But, what if we turned the question around for a moment? What if the question was instead: “What does it sound like to compose a deliverable through the use of technology or what does the act of creating communication sound like?”
