Teens, Technology, and Writing

The following is a link to a press release from Pew/Internet & American Life Project titled "Teens do not consider a lot of their electronic texts as writing" that was posted to the WPA listserv. The article begins as follows:
WASHINGTON – The state of writing among teens today is marked by an interesting paradox: While teens are heavily embedded in a tech-rich world and craft a significant amount of electronic text, they see a fundamental distinction between their electronic social communications and the more formal writing they do for school or for personal reasons.

Pimping out .edu domains

The Pickering Institute in Missouri is pimping out its edu domain names. The Institute, which falls under my definition of a "questionable institution," is clearly not what we expect when we hear the .edu domain. Its home page consists of a standard blog template and two short front page entries, the oldest of which is from March 2008. PI's ethos is no better established by its two-paragraph long "About us" page.

Studying a Community

In our discussion on Thursday, there were various comments about having students study an online community first before they participated within it. While I think this is sound pedagogy on our parts, I wonder if we're having enough discussion with them up front about what exactly a community is. While I realize that time/space limits during the semester may not allow for extensive discussion of community and how they are rhetorical, it does seem to be something that students should begin thinking more about, i.e.

On Autism

As the discussion of the use of sound in composition is new to me and I don't have a lot to add on the subject, I wanted to at least post something in regards to our lengthy discussion in class on Tuesday regarding autism.
A few years ago I had the pleasure of reading Temple Grandin's book Thinking in Pictures: And Other Reports from My Life with Autism. As is obvious from the book's title, Grandin discusses how, rather than using what linguists might call "interlanguage," she thinks in images.
Here are the first few lines from chapter one of her book:

"Just For You"

My initial thought on the iTunes article was that of agreement in regards to the legal reasoning that is discussed. Sharing music in a manner which teeters on the line of legality and not, the article is able to formulate a type of understood reasoning between what is okay to do and what is not. Showing iTunes as an exception to the rule, yet showing this “digital jukebox” as simply a place to organize, share, listen as well as do a type of “judging” of other’s digital jukeboxes.

Purpose of iTunes Article

I'm not sure what the point of the iTunes article was. I saw that it was a sort of case study of an office using the iTunes sharing feature, but I didn't know the real upshot. So I'll try to make one.

More on Resident Evil 5

A lot of the original discussion around race and RE5 happened last year when the trailer was first released. Now for some strange reason it is coming up again in the last week or so.
One of the initial posts was at joystiq and was written in response to an initial post at the blog Black Looks (July 31, 2007).
