Reviews of Friday's Presentations/projects

We're supposed to comment on the project presented over the week; so, here's just some comments. Overall, I really like the presentations. I love the topics you three covered. It's incredibly interesting.

Melanie: You're subject matter is incredibly interesting. I like that it goes outside of the box. The format of your project is great as well. I think that any other format would not do the subject justice and that showing the life of these people through a first-person narrative is the best way to achieve an authentic, insightful product.

Emily: You put a lot of work into your scrapbook and the presentation of your research was in such a way I had never thought of before. I think by creating a scrapbook, you've created a product that is not only visually interesting but allows the viewer to get a better glimpse of a Peace Corp. member. I liked your use of the sun in one of your entries and the accompanying page. I think that was a very effective use of descriptive words.

Harini: Your topic is very interesting. I like the visual aspect of your project. It helps bring the women alive. I liked the presentation of interesting facts. It caught my attention. I noticed, though, that you utilize a lot of quotations. They're very poignant quotations, but I think more paraphrasing might be useful or maybe more of a summary of what point you're trying to make. I think that might make your proejct more cohesive.

I guess this format works, so I'll just add my thoughts here.

Melanie: I wasn't sure about your topic when you first brought it up in class. It seemed too narrow (why just limit it to Amsterdam?), but after seeing the presentation I think I understand it a lot more. The project takes a look at a lifestyle that is so out of the ordinary that it's taboo even in a place like Amsterdam. The first-person narrative format works exceptionally well, considering all of the psychological aspects to your topic. The only complaint I can think of is that we don't get to read all of it (if I could read it, I'm sure I would be able to come up with some suggestions)

Emily: The scrapbook idea is amazing for your topic. I could actually see someone from the Peace Corps making something that probably wouldn't be much different from your project. I think this really sets your project apart from virtually everyone else's in all the best ways. I do suggest, and this was also brought up in class, that you make sure it isn't too heavy on the "lows." At the same time, keep it realistic. You don't want it to feel too idealistic.

Harini: Your topic is great because, I'm sure, everyone else in the class is unfamiliar with it. You're also looking at women in a male-dominated society, which many of us do know something about. Comparing and contrasting the status of women in this country with the Bedouins can show a lot about both societies, and I think that's an interesting thing to focus on with the project. I like your format right now. It's simple, but effective. The facts are all helpful and the quotations all work very well in showing what these women are thinking. I don't think it's absolutely necessary to cut anything out of the quotes, but it could be helpful to add emphasis in a few places that you consider to be particularly important. As always, make sure you give the facts and quotes appropriate context so the project can stand alone.

huh

I sort of thought other people would follow my example and just reply to one thread rather than making their own. It seems like this would be a lot easier to navigate through, and thus a lot easier for the presenters to read the comments, but I guess it really doesn't matter.

I agree.

I agree. Smiling

Friday's presentations...

I really thought the first presenters did extremely well. All of the topics were things I did not really know much about, so all of the presentations were extremely interesting and informing for me.

Melanie: First, I think it is cool that you have friends from another country. I myself have never been out of the country, much less Indiana. I too, could never imagine loving more than one person that strongly. But, I thought their lifestyle was very interesting to learn about. We had just talked about polyamors in sociology and this seemed to help inform me more because it was learning about an actual person.

Emily: Your presentation about the Peace Corps was very interesting for me especially learning that most people want to join for themselves more than they want to join to help others. I thought the scrapbook was a good way to present your topic and it looks like you put a lot of time into it!

Harini: Your topic about Bedouin people was also very interesting to me because I really don’t know much about them at all. I thought your presentation was very informative and the use of power point helped to deliver your information.

I also want to comment on this project. I think it is a good way to end the year because we didn’t have to write a paper. It is also very informative not only for us but for the rest of our class. I have really enjoyed this project because we got to pick our topics.

Friday presentations

Melanie- Your presentation was very interesting. You brought up a culture/ideology that I did not know existed. I think your story will be very interesting, especially since you are writing it in first person narrative.

Emily- Sweet Scrap book. I think this is a very interesting way of presenting your information. I also like how you show the mood change a lot of the members have. Overall I really liked your project.

Harini- You picked a very interesting topic, one that I knew very little about. You have a lot of interesting information, but in my opinion you just have to much info on each slide. That made it hard to follow. I agree with the response above mine, try to paraphrase a little more.
