thoughts on the film

Personally I thought the movie was pretty well done and definately interesting. I liked how it showed the huge contrast between the amish way of life and english life outside an amish community. I was sort of surprised at first to see how hardcore some of the amish kids would party or how deep they would get into drugs and alcohol. Then I thought about it a little bit, and it wasn't so surprising. If you think about it, a lot of times denying a person something or putting them in a situation where they aren't able to do something they want to backfires big time. It's like a reverse pschology effect. Make the alcohol and drugs unattainable but having the kids still know about it just makes them want to try it more and more. That way, by the time they reach their rumspringa, they have built up an excitement or big interest in knowing what it's like to be high, or drunk. The whole idea of a rumspringa I think is fine, in fact I think it is important to give the amish kids a chance to see life outside their community. However, I think the way that they are offered the opportunity to do whatever they want, without counselling or any advice/experience or knowledge of what drugs and alcohol can do is wrong. If you are going to let a sixteen year old live on their own for any length of time, they should have some sort of education in drugs and alcohol so that they don't go overboard. If you tell them what to expect or what it can do to them it will give them a chance to think about their decisions and consequences resulting from their choices, rather than being in the dark.
