Transportation

I, myself, have been very excited when it has snowed up here at Purdue. I was eager to see the campus bathed in white and to make snow angels and have snowball fights. But from my parents and other adults I know I notice far less enthusiasm. They are concerned about the snow, and don't want much if any. Now, this made me sad, but I had to realize that their situation is totally different from my own. They have cars and jobs that are far away from home which they have to drive their cars to. They dred the slippery slush that clogs the roads and causes accidents. So I am thankful that I live on a relatively small campus, where I can walk basically everywhere, or ride the bus, and not worry about the road conditions or traffic. Sure, having a car might be nice on a weekend when I'm bored and I want to get away or go home, but over all, I'm content without. I don't have to pay for gas, I don't have to worry about parking or the car getting hurt, I don't have to clean snow or dirt off of it, I don't have to worry about it not working or pay maintenance bills. Plus I love walking; I have two good legs that get me where I need to go, and it burns calories too. I always feel better after a good walk. Like most of us, I try to exercise, but it doesn't always work out. By having to walk everywhere, I know I will get some exercise every day. I also get to watch people. Not in a creepy way, it is just interesting to see how many people are braving the cold, how many are totally bundled up, who's walking alone, who's in a group, the slow walkers, the fast walkers, and even the bikers. I can't count on my fingers and toes put together how many people are either listening to music or talking on the phone while walking. Yes, I do it too, but I try to do it as least often as possible. Walking gives me time to think; about my last class, about the class coming up, about the work I have yet to do, or my plans that evening. I guess I really like my form of transportation. Someday I will be happy and ready to have a car on campus, but right now my own leg and will-power will suffice.

I have my car. And I like it

I have my car. And I like it a lot. And I was sooo mad when it snowed because I thought I wasn't going to be able to get home for the weekend... I am done with class at 9:30 on Friday so I have essentially three days at home! Well I decided to go for it anyway. And I made it home! Snow and all. But it still would have been better if it hadn't snowed. In m opinion.

I would much rather have

I would much rather have snow and cold than just cold. Yes, snow does get in the way, but if one is in a situation where you have what you need, including your friends, getting snowed in is an adventure. I'm very glad you made it home though, and I was concerned for another friend of mine who was trying to get home. I would have felt bad for you if you had gotten stuck here--but then I probably would have invited you to come play in the snow with me and enjoy it while it lasted!

I had my car here and I

I had my car here and I liked it when I was going home. However, I agree just walking around campus is nice, except right now. It is really cold outside and when the wind takes its toll its FREEZING. I would much rather it be spring time with pretty flowers and zero snow. However, I do have a strict "if it is going to be cold out side it might as well snow" policy. I do not have a nice pair of boots though, so I would rather it just be warm out side and I don't have to worry about snow. The rain is never fun either though. I don't like it when my pants are wet. It is just no fun. I really want to invest in a pair of rain boots but I'm not sure I can pull it off. I went off in like 8 million different directions with this one but that is ok.

I don't have a car either

I don't have a car here, partly because I'm not allowed to, and partly because I don't think my car would survive the 150 mile trip from my house. And while it is somewhat inconvenient if I actually want to go off campus, I really don't mind not being able to drive anywhere. Like you said, there are so many things that you have to worry about when you have a car, with all the money spent on gas being the worst. And I also love walking. Just like you, I love being alone with my thoughts and studying other people as they walk. When you spend your life watching people like one normally does animals in a zoo, this campus is pretty fascinating between classes. And does anyone else get a sense of accomplishment when they reach their destination after walking all of the way there? Being the fan I am of self-reliance, I do, particularly when it's really snowy. Which reminds me, for all the problems the snow might cause, isn't this campus just absolutely beautiful when it snows? I've taken the longer route to classes before, just to admire how the campus looks after it snows. But anyway, I don't miss my car. I believe that all this walking is actually making me a better person, because I believe that, in a way, walking brings you closer to nature, and that's always a good a thing, isn't it?
