Reading Response Project 3
I think project three is going to be one of the most unique projects I have ever been assigned. This project I think will get us involved with our community. Even though this is a project and we get a grade for our work, I think this is still considered community service. In order for us to get a decent grade on this project we have to go out into the community, use effective communication skills, and execute our plan of action. While reading over Faber’s article I really didn’t see the connection at first. While reading I was thinking what was the importance of reading this article in the first place. What I got from this article was that service learning should be instituted more. Also communication is also a key factor for success in this project. Our communication process must be in a professional manner. Since we are working with and outside source, we must be very formal when we communicate. This is a very important aspect because we do not want the look unprofessional when working with a service center. Like I said before this is a project but it is also community service. In high school, a requirement was that we had to do a certain number of hours of community service. This was a very valuable experience for me with actually getting out in the community and making a difference. I think that is what this project is teaching us. Learning is not just about reading a book and then being able to memorize its contents. Learning is knowing how to communicate and work effectively with others. Learning from hands on experience is the best way to learn. I think this project will really bring out the best in people while at the same time we will be helping our community.

2 Birds With One Stone
It is certainly interesting how the market for education and the globalization of information and communication have taken some of the focus off of the community. It appears that service learning kills two birds with one stone. It encourages growing minds to make a habit of caring and helping the community, and it also creates an atmosphere of real world communication where motivation and evaluation come from outside the professor and the classroom. You mention how “we do not want to look unprofessional when working with a service center.” This is an example of an external motivation for development of professional demeanor in practical writing.

I agree with everything you said. Using effective communication skills and being able to execute the plan is what is most important for this project. I also feel that community service should be instituted more than it is. I did not have to do community service during high school at all. The more I think about it, the most I wish that we had to do something for the community. One of the classes I took my sophomore year of college had a requirement of doing a certain amount of hours of community service. I worked at the Lafayette Humane Society walking the animals and just looking after them. It was a great experience and I loved helping the community. I think that hands-on learning is the best way to learn and that is why I think this project is great.
