Service Learnin Project (Landscaping Brochures)

The idea I have for the service learning project is to contact a local landscaping company and approach them with the idea of making brochures about the different services they offer. I have worked for a landscaping company before, and I know that many of them offer more than just landscaping (planting trees and shrubs). Many landscaping companies offer lawn service, as well as install new yards (sod or sew grass seed), build retaining walls, lay stone paths, install sprinkler systems, lay underground tile and downspouting, install watering gardens, and many others things. From experience with the landscaping business, I know it is difficult to advertise all of the services you have to offer, but I think if you had brochures that you could take to local home and garden shows and local stores and give out, you could better inform the public of the services you have to offer. I don't think prices would be a good thing to include of these brochures, for the fact that every job differs in size, materials used, and labor hours required. For the general idea of educating local people on what services a company offers and provide them with some pictures of previous work and potential work, I think this project is perfect. I am open to any new ideas that expand off of this topic also.

Service Learnig Comments

Do to the fact that Wines on the Wabash is April 4th, we are unable to do the service leaning project with Village Bottle Shoope. Travis' idea is a great that can be fully adabtive to the project. Being able to take a business and shape it up would be a great learnign project for us. Another idea that we as a group were thinking of is Grand Prix. Alot of people don't know dates, activities, and events that are occuring. We would be able to interact with the student organizations and reflect any funtions that could be conducted to achieve this service learning task.

Service Learning Project

One idea that I came up with is helping Wines on the Wabash. I work for Village Bottle Shoppe and every year they help host a wine sampling event that benefits some sort of chartity. Unfortunatley, not many students are aware of this event. While applying the service learning project guidelines, my group and I could help awarness by overviewing their advertisments and make fliers and develop an interest in the student community. I've decided on this event because it not only benefits the local community in charity funds but allows for people to interact and taste the finer qualities of life while in a fun and relaxing environment.

Wines on the Wabash

I'm in.

Sounds like a great idea

Sounds like a great idea that fits the criteria. Plus I'm a big fan of booze. Count me in.

Yeah, something like that

Yeah, something like that sounds good. We will see what we can do for that.

Service Learning Project Proposal

My idea for the service learning project is to help promote and market Windows on the Levee, a martini bar located above Capp and Ginos coffee shop located next to mcdonalds on 43. The martini bar has been there for a couple of years, and having gone there many times with my parents and family i've noticed it is not very well known with the college aged students, who could get a new interesting take on the normal bar scene. I feel that creating fliers and/or brochures could increase Windows on the Levee's clientele to include more college aged students. It is a small business that caters to a specific niche and has room to expand that niche to include a younger generation so i feel like this project could actually produce real effects seen by the company.

Martini Bar

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Never been in there myself so it will be a good learning experience too. Count me in.

Ross: I'd be interested in

Ross:

I'd be interested in developing a deliverable which helps expand to new demographics. I feel I could use the writing experience doing something along those lines while contributing my existing experiences positively to the overall project. Let me know if you can use me.

Brad

This is a really good idea.

This is a really good idea. I've been to Cap n' Ginos several times for coffee and for martini's and its a great place to promote for college students.

service learning project

For this project, I think it would be interesting to do advertisement sort of thing for the Co-rec. It really has so much to offer, and not all the students are aware of all the opportunities that are available there for individuals as well as for groups or organizations. I think it could really benefit people in knowing more about it so they can take advantage of the facilities. Plus at the same time it would be a good way to promote exercise and health issues (since obesity and being overweight is such a big issue in America currently). Also, since the co-rec is already making plans of improving their facility and having new additions to it, it would be good to find out what is coming in the future for the students.

Hip-Hop Guest Speaker Promotion

Being Vice President of the Purdue Hip-Hop Society for the past 3 years, I oversee many operations of the organization and help in conducting various meetings, events, and concerts for our organization. During my time at Purdue, our organization has recently expressed interest in bringing a hip-hop artist to come and speak about their experiences and the current stereotypes existing in the industry today. My idea for this project is to have a promotion for an guest speaker, specifically an individual from inside the music industry. Last year, we actually hosted an open discussion forum called "Does Hip-Hop Hate Women?" and you may recall that this widely-discussed topic was the center of the news on (CNN, NBC,etc.) last year.

Most of the music acts at Purdue have been for concerts, and we are trying to steer away from that and bring in a guest speaker who won't be performing (unless they want to do a song or two! ). Grants and proposals from different academic departments are available for these types of events because these guest speakers can bring in a positive image and vibe to campus. In my opinion, promotion for this type of event could include developing a brochure, flyers, tv/radio ads, talking to academic departments for grant opportunities, as well as meeting with other student organizations/frats/sororities for additional funding opportunities. We are not looking to make money for the organization, but rather provide valuable insight to Purdue students from a real-world artist and to those who are interested in understanding what hip-hop really is.

SL Project Proposal - McCormick Place Webletter

Introduction

McCormick Place is an apartment community located a little over 2 miles from campus, and my current place of residence. As the management team focuses on a community-oriented environment for its residents, a written newsletter is sent out (usually) on a monthly basis. Aside from resident-wide important announcements via e-mail, McCormick has no separate web newsletter in circulation. The purpose of this project will be to design an electronic newsletter for McCormick Place along with an aesthetically appealing template for future updates. This will include information about current residents, local events and highlights, as well as community events, and all of the important updates currently dispersed in e-mail alerts. Formatting will be taken into consideration in order to better suit a number of common e-mail clients.

Requirements
A basic understanding of common design applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks, and Dreamweaver is preferred, but not required. As the purpose of the project is to maintain a simplistic, easy-to-follow design template for the newsletter, the project does not demand any advanced, or prior knowledge of these programs, or understanding of web programming or animations.

Expectations
Group members will be expected to meet at least once a week, with a likely 2-3 visits to the McCormick office on McCormick Road. We will likely be meeting at least once a week in the Digital Learning Lab in the basement of Hicks to consider and implement web design ideas.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at bfawaz@purdue.edu.

campus activity

I am the president of a smaller student organization on campus. Last semester a student in this class came to me for this project and wanted to create a brochure and power point presentation our group could give to possible sponsors or new members. The experience was enjoyable and I thought it would be a good idea to do for another organization. The idea is basically to find a student organization on campus that is relatively small or unknown and create some type of presentation tool to help them gain members and recognition.

I have a group together for my service learning project, we will be working on this together.

Service Learning Topic

For the service learning project I propose that we work with my current employer, PRIMElab, to create a brochure for users (customers) of the labs research that gives a brief overview of how the accelerator works, the types of research we're capable of doing, and background and past performance. I feel that there is a real need for this in our lab because the question I am asked the most is "what do you do, what is an accelerator?" Also, to have samples run at our facility it is quite expensive and time consuming, so I think offering more in-depth feedback, besides raw data, would be reassuring to customers. Also, an animation of "how it works" would be neat.

Jared's Service Learning Project: Un Canto a La Vida

South Quito is a region of over 700,000 people with one full-service hospital. A second hospital--Un Canto a la Vida (a song for life)--is currently under construction and would be not only the second full-service hospital in the region, but also the first with a pediatric or neonatology unit.

The hospital's construction is piece-meal, with sections being completed as funds come into the foundation charged with its construction. As of now, only the first floor--the outpatient wards--is open for service, but with consistent funding, the entire four-story hospital could be completed by spring of 2009. This 150-bed hospital needs ~$3 million to reach completion, and for as little as $5000, an organization can open a room in the pediatric or neonatology wards.

I'm proposing that a group here develop a multimedia (Powerpoint) presentation and brochure to raise awareness for the hospital among potential donors in the US. This would then be used by interested students at Purdue to advocate on the hospital's behalf in Indiana and solicit donations. I have visual materials as well as information on which to build the presentation and brochure, as well as contact information for parties involved in both Ecuador and the United States (located in Indianapolis).

Jared

this is a great idea. I'd

this is a great idea. I'd like to team up with you on this. My only concern is that we wouldn't be working close enough to the actual organization to get feedback from them

That's a good point.

That's a good point. There's a non-profit in Indianapolis though that's been raising money for this hospital for quite some time. I know a few of the employees there and they'd be glad to supply us with any information we might need. They would probably act as our source of feedback as well.

Aaron Westbrooke

My idea for the service learning project would be to help create a document for the boys and girls club located in lafayette. They do a lot for the community and I think it would be good to help them out with business documents such as a brochure or flier or even a power point. Whatever it is that they need to get word out to the community that they are there to help. We could create a brochure of their programs, local hours and fees. Or we could create documents informing people of the benefits that come from the boys and girls club, such as the "youth of the year" award. Anyway, that is what I was thinking of doing for this project.

Service Learning Project - Purdue Band

My idea for the Service Learning Project is to find a student organization on campus like a sports or social club and help promote their events. One idea I had was for the Purdue University Band. The Purdue Band has many free concerts and events throughout the school year, and I would like to make brochures or fliers to hand out or post around campus to promote these events. For instance, there are several band events taking place in April including recitals and showcases. All of these events are opportunities to enjoy great music, and show support for our Purdue band!

Great idea

This sounds like a great idea, I have some ideas for promoting concerts and events that can help spread the awareness across campus. You can count me in.

sounds good

looks like we have a third too!

Vienna

My proposal is to create a pamphlet and series of promotional material for Vienna coffee shop. Vienna hosts an open mic every Tuesday evening and I feel confident that more students would attend if they knew more about it. The event attracts such musicians as our very own David Poer, and is very popular among Vienna regulars as a nice place to hang out with friends, listen to indie music, and meet new people. I have talked to the part-owner, Hussein, and he was very supportive of the idea. We brainstormed and came up with several reasonable options. I think it would be most helpful to produce one general pamphlet, placed at various locations around campus, and a series of posters promoting the individual artists who frequently play. The design of these posters would be reproducible for future use.

HA HA! that would be fun

HA HA! that would be fun

Animal Shelter

I thought of possible working with the local animal shelter here in Lafayette. With their permission I was thinking about possible putting together a pamphlet for the shelter. In this pamphlet we could help to inform readers of the benefits of getting a shelter dog instead of a puppy from a store. Also information can be giving about the history of the shelter and any help or donations that people to give to aid in the shelter's care of the animals. On another part of this pamphlet we could explain the criteria and guidelines people should consider when purchasing an animal from either the shelter or a store to inform readers of the requirements needed to help prevent more animals arriving at the shelter.
That is just one option I was considering if a group was to work with them. Of course the group would be open to any other suggestions or needs that the owner of the shelter is looking for, as long as they are within the group’s ability to get accomplished within the time frame we have.

service learning project

I had an idea for the service learning project that could involve local restaurants and either developing a menu or just simply promoting specials that are available. Local restaurants may have trouble promoting specials to students, where they most likely get a lot of their business. I thought around Grand Prix and the beginning of spring, students will be more likely to go out and eat. I was thinking Scotty’s, The Stadium Club, or other small businesses that are less known. I think the project would involve some creative project or design as well as business writing. Also some sort of flyer or pamphlet would be helpful to pass out to students or at the location in order to inform those that eat there of certain deals. Also drink deals would be good to point out because many college students would be interested in these. We would probably need to search around at several locations to see who needed help with promotion and who would be interested in having students do this for them. It would require one on one conversation with a manager about what they need whether it be a fresh, creative menu or maybe just flyers or something passed around campus. A combination of things might be required in order to satisfy what the company needs.

student organization

I have talked over some ideas with Pat and we both like the idea of using a student organization that has a relatively low membership on campus and work with them to help promote the club. He said that someone in one of his organizations had previously expressed interest in doing something like this and it would be a good way to get the clubs name out to the rest of campus.
