Organization Choice, Scott Dennis, 4/2/08, JasonS0201
My organization of choice is the company I worked for part-time when I wasn't working my other part-time job. I worked in the IT department and a lot of the work is maintenance and keep-up. Troubleshooting pains took longer and longer as the company was growing and revamping their systems. I happily accepted being the assistant network administrator, but noticed it took a million e-mails just to convey what the problem was. Since there are a couple branch locations, time to visit and repair out of the office took additional time on top of the lag between sending e-mails. Usually major problems, like a server going down, was fixed immediately and given the highest priority. But for more minor problems, a week could go by with very little done. I think because the department was so busy, tasks got put back and usually phone calls wouldn't help. Hiring me was a big help to shorten the time a problem was reported to the time things were repaired, but I think the process could be improved upon. Some of the users satisfaction went down because considerable time could pass before anything was done. The actual repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting times didn't take the longest, it was the communication back and forth that was a time-waster. Knowing EXACTLY what was wrong (hard to know with a novice user) and what equipment, hardware/software to bring to fix the problem became a hassle at sometimes. Because the user wasn't always sure all the time, it was sometimes a hassle for us to figure out and that's where alot of the time was wasted.
