Organization Choice, Rebecca Longster, 4/2/08, KrystleK0101
The organization I chose is the Blue Gate Restaurant which is a part of Riegsecker Marketplace in Shipshewana, Indiana. I have been a waitress here for the past five years, and there are several communication gaps that need to be addressed. The main communication issue is between the employees and the managers with scheduling. Scheduling is always put off until the last minute and employees are working different shifts, days, and hours week to week. At times, the schedule is up less than a week in advance so it's hard to plan your other weekly activities around your work schedule. Also, numerous times I have showed up to work only to find out the schedule has been changed without informing me and I either work a different shift that day or don't work at all. They are also required to have "extras" in case a waiter/waitress calls in sick and several times I have been one of these unneeded extras and have not been called off and drove all the way to work only to find I'm not needed. Also, the managers recently have decided to no longer assist in helping find replacements for you if you are unable to work and began ranking all of the servers so only servers of your rank can work for you making the process even more complicated. I plan on designing a communications system to help clear up the confusion and difficulties of being able to work your given shifts as well as being able to find a replacement for you if needed without much struggling.
