My choice for the project will have to be the lack of communication and consistency at the Emergency Veterinary clinic I worked for. The biggest problem we currently have are the way we process clients and assess patients. We have a varied staff, from registered veterinary technicians that have been out in the field for many years to assistants and receptionists. The gap in communication is due to the lack of knowledge and experience our assistants, receptionists and new Vet Techs with emergency and critical patients. Unfortunately, we have had incomplete history, physical exam, and basic stats. The vet techs and veterinarian must then take more time to complete and gather the proper information before compiling a nursing plan and diagnostic differentials. So, I feel that we as a facility should a protocol or SOP (standard operating procedure) that will be able to facilitate with any situation and can be done by assistants instead of veterinarians and technicians. I also think that training and having monthly meetings to reassess the protocols will help with the communication among the team. The monthly meetings and training can also help with establishing better relationships and create a better "team spirit" which is very critical. Not only will better communication help the business side of the facility, it will also impact the quality of care and monitoring the patients will receive.
