White Paper Project Assessment, Scott Dennis, 3/27/08, MandyR0301
My group, group three, chose the topic of illegal file sharing. This was such a well chosen topic because it is affecting each and every one of us at Purdue University, but also college students as a whole. There is so much of this illegal activity going on not only on our campus, but campuses throughout the nation. Therefore, this was not only going to be an informative paper, as far as solutions go, but also an easily related topic to our audience.
The actually design of any project is important. For this specific type of project visuals were beneficial because it gave people more of an insight to what we were talking about. It also provided pizzazz to a bland report. Visuals are a more creative way to express what you are actually writing. Also, it is nice to sometimes create text boxes, like we did, with powerful quotes. This helps display more of an impact on the true meaning behind the message than if the person were to just read it in the middle of the text.
This specific project, I think, was more effective with the visuals because it sparked more of an interest then. If it were just a blank and bland report people would not be as interested in reading what our proposal had to say. It draws the eye in to specific and important details that may otherwise be just skimmed over.
Our team worked very well together. We learned that you all need to take part in the project. The best thing for us to do was to divide it up and take our own initiative to finish and deliver the information to the group. I think the best part about our group is that we all had the drive to succeed. The most challenging part was not having a classroom to meet in and relying solely on email. Lucky for us we all check our email so frequently it never caused a problem, but talking face to face is way more efficient and less time consuming than waiting for reply emails. I planned my work on this project very well. My goals were clearly established from the beginning and I stayed focused and on task to achieve them, as did the rest of my group. I think I would have found a better and faster way to communicate with little laps in time if I were to do something like this again.
It is always a smart thing to have others look over your work because you are bound to miss something. Also, it is always good to re-read aloud what you or someone else has written to ensure it is grammatically correct and sounds decent. When reading others work I not only become more aware of habits I may use when writing, but also may learn from their mistakes.
