Contributions: NCAA Action Regarding Investigations/Offenses
Because I was the only person in my group whose original topic proposal was not something similar to our group topic, I had to do a lot of additional research so that we could all be on the same page when contributing ideas and proposed solutions with this ongoing dilemma. Because I am an athlete at Purdue, I used my connections to contact the following staff to ask them if they would be willing to contribute their ideas on NCAA rules and regulations as well as how to handle those who disregard them. The following people I have informed of our project are:
Dr. France Cordova
Purdue University President
1031 Hovde Hall, Room 200
West Lafayette, IN 47907-1031
president@purdue.edu
Morgan Burke
Purdue Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
(765) 494-3189
mjb@purdue.edu
Roger Blalock
Purdue Senior Associate Athletics Director
(765)494-3203
rlblalock@purdue.edu
Tom Reiter
Assistant Athletics Director-Compliance
(765)494-3208
treiter@purdue.edu
Besides this, I also wrote the formal request and gathered the list of potential sources for our submitted group memo. While researching potential sources, I found the following websites to be very helpful.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3258506
This particular article describes Kelvin Sampson’s violations, as well as how and why they came to solving the issue by him resigning with the $750,000 settlement.
http://www.ncaa.org
This article describes how the NCAA Infraction Appeals Committee is handling a situation where 12 student athletes were paid about $17,000 in unearned wages at the University of Oklahoma.
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080226/SPORTS0601/3...
From the Indy Star, this article describes former IU coach, Kelvin Sampson’s separation agreement as well as reactions from university officials and players.
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080226/SPORTS0601/3...
Another article from the Indy Star compares and contrasts similar, recent infractions cases at different universities describing the violations, penalties, and effects on coaches.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2008-02-25-ncaa-sanctions_N.htm
Because of recent issues, this article discusses how times are changing, and discussing the possibility of NCAA penalties changing as well to accommodate the new sports era.
Our group is going to continue meeting, and I plan to expand upon my research in this field as well as be an influential contributor throughout this project.
