Manipulating an Imported Image with PageMaker 6.5

http://www.adobe.com/

PageMaker is a photo-editing tool that allows the user to create advertising brochures, business cards, and other high-quality publications.† This short tutorial will demonstrate to a new user how to open up the program and manipulate an imported image or graphic.

Required materials should include the following:

  • Basic knowledge of the Windows operating system
  • An existing image, as well as the file location of the image on the computer
  • A working copy of PageMaker 6.5

1. Open PageMaker by double clicking on the PageMaker Icon on the desktop, or by clicking the icon located in the start menu.

2. Click on 'File', then 'New'. When the dialogue box appears, enter desired document setup options and then click 'OK'.

Once the document setup information has been entered, you are now ready to import an image into the blank PageMaker file.†

3.      To import a preexisting image click ëFileí, then ëPlaceí and the following figure will appear allowing you to browse for your file.†

4. After the file is chosen, the ëPlaceí window will close and the blank PageMaker file will appear with a ëPlace Graphicsí cursor icon, as shown here:

Click on the desired location, and the image will be inserted at that position.†

Once imported, many options are available to modify, and otherwise manipulate an image.† Several of these options is to move an image from one location to another, crop or resize an image, and duplicate an image.† ††

5. To move an image, click on the image and drag it while holding down the left mouse button.† A rectangle will appear indicated the position of the image.† This example is shown below:

6. Another manipulating feature is resizing an image.† To accomplish this place the cursor on any corner of the image and drag until reaches the desired size.† A rectangle will appear, indicating the size and shape of the image:

To maintain the aspect ratio, hold the ëShiftí key down while dragging.† Note:† Be aware that resizing an image can cause distortion.

7. Cropping is accomplished by selecting the ëCropí tool icon, shown here:

You should then select the image by clicking anywhere on the image. †Using the ëCropí cursor, select an edge or corner of the image and hold.† A straight line should now appear, notifying the user he/she can crop the image.† To continue cropping the image, drag the cursor into the image until you have cut out everything you wish to cut out.† This can be performed for every side of the image that you wish to modify.

8. Another manipulating feature is duplicating an image.† To do this select the image by clicking on it, then under the main menu select ëEdití, then ëCopyí.

9. Once the image has been copied into the computerís clipboard,† the image can then be pasted to another location on the screen using the ëEdití, then ëPasteí under the main menu.† Once pasted, the image will most likely be inserted on top of the original image.† The image can then be moved by using the process in step 5.†

10.  Rotating an image is another manipulating feature.† This is done by selecting the ëRotateî tool icon .†

Next, click the part of the image that you wish to use as the axis of rotation and drag until it reaches the desired rotation.† A rectangle appears indicating the position of the image.† Release the mouse button and you should now have a rotated image:

Congratulations! You have now learned the basics of image manipulation, using PageMaker 6.5.
