You may not have known this, but...
The IMP lab is NOT a PUCC lab; it functions completely under the auspices of the Professional Writing Program (with funding from the Department of English and the College of Liberal Arts). Therefore, we are unable to use those methods of uploading files that have direct ties to PUCC resources.
But with the use of an outside FTP client -- in this case, WS_FTP -- you can still upload files to your Career Account.
1. Open WS_FTP by clicking on the desktop shortcut. The following window will appear:

2. Type your Career Account login name in the box labeled User ID. Then type your password in the box labeled Password. Click OK. You will hear a train-whistle sound as the following window appears:

NOTE: The left-side window corresponds with the materials on your local disks (default -- C drive). The right-side window corresponds with the materials on the server to which you wish to upload materials. The object of file transfer, typically, is to move files from the local disk to the remote server. But you may also use FTP to move files from the right to the left (if, for example, you have lost a file from your local disk but have a duplicate one on a remote server).
3. Unless the file you wish to transfer is on your C drive, specify a drive by scrolling to the bottom of the list within the left-side window and double-clicking on the blue box next to the letter. For the following example, we will work with a file located in the D drive (the letter assigned to the Zip drive on the Dell in the IMP lab).

4. If the file you wish to work with is placed individually within the drive, click on the file in order to highlight it. If, as is the case with our example, it is located within a folder, click on the folder to open it -- and then click on the individual file in order to highlight it. An example, with folder opened and file selected (birdbath.jpg), is shown below:

Now it's time to move our selected file, a JPEG of a birdbath, from our Zip disk to a page on the World Wide Web! We will now work with the right-side window, as well as with the arrows that sit between the two windows.
5. Because most Career Accounts contain multiple folders (including pucc0000), double-click on the www folder located in the right-side window in order to select it. The following window should then appear:

6. Click on the box to the left of Auto, located immediately under the two windows. Selecting Auto removes the need to guess whether the file you wish to upload is an ASCII file or a binary file.
7. If you wish to place your file individually within the www drive, click on the right-pointing (bottom) arrow, located between the two windows. Your file has now been uploaded to the remote server.
7a. If you need to place your file within a folder located in the remote server space -- as will be demonstrated in our example -- you must double-click on the corresponding folder in the right-side window in order to open it. Then select the individual file within that folder. The result is shown below:

7b. Click on the right-pointing arrow in order to upload the file to the remote server. At the end of a successful transfer, you will hear a noise reminiscent of a pinball machine indicating a "score." The file is now on the remote server, in a folder titled 421, as shown below:

Uploading two or more individual files from the same directory and/or folder...
1. After opening WS_FTP and selecting the appropriate directory and/or folder, select the first file to be moved to the remote server. For our example, we will work with the files adimage.jpg, birdbath.jpg, and birdflyer.html. The following will appear:

2. While holding down the Control button on your keyboard, use your mouse to click on the file(s) to be included. The result appears below:

3. Move the selected files to the remote server, using the instructions found in the first part of this tutorial. Successful transfer is shown below:

Uploading individual files grouped together within a drive and/or a folder within a drive...
1. Select the first file to be uploaded.
2. While holding down the Shift key, use the mouse to click on the last file to be uploaded. The following will appear:

3. Move the selected files to the remote server, using the instructions found in the first part of this tutorial. Successful transfer is shown below:

Uploading an entire folder:
The World Wide Web is a collection of directories and subdirectories. For example, the website for the IMP lab consists of a subdirectory of the larger Professional Writing website -- which is, itself, a subdirectory of the Department of English website -- which is.... You get the idea.
1. Follow above instructions for opening and logging into the WS_FTP client.
2. Select -- do not open -- the folder to be uploaded to the remote server. For our example, we will work with a folder titled "tutorials," as shown below:

3. Click on the right-pointing (bottom) arrow. You will see the following:

4. Click on the Yes button. The folder, and all of its contents, will upload to the remote server. Successful transfer is shown below:

Congratulations! You now know how to transfer individual files to individual locations, individual files to specific folders, multiple files to individual locations, multiple files to specific folders, and entire folders. In our next tutorial, you will learn how to delete files from the remote server.
