FTP with Fetch

Uploading and downloading files to your Purdue home directory using a Macintosh

Authored by Tracy Clark

Basics

If you would like to work on documents such as your course website at home, or if you are working on a Mac on campus that is not connected to the PUCC network, you can access your Purdue career account using an FTP program. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and FTP programs will let you copy documents from your home computer to the Purdue servers, or from the Purdue servers to your home computer. When you want to get files from your career account, this is called downloading a file or "getting" a file. When you want to put files from your home computer into your career account, this is called uploading a file or "putting" a file.

This documentation will cover how to use a FTP program called Fetch to upload and download files to and from your Purdue career account from your home Macintosh computer. (If you would like PC documentation, that is also available.) You can download Fetch 5 (for Mac OS X 10.2.4 and later, including Tiger) by clicking on this link and it will unstuff itself automatically. You can then follow the instructions in the Fetch folder to install the software on your system.
