Description

The project we will be dealing with is regarding on-line gaming and how it can be benefited by using open source. On-line gaming has a wide spectrum of users across the globe. Many could add programs to an on-line game that would hopefully only benefit the company. We plan to discuss this benefit and show how it will be produce a positive outcome for many companies.

Attached you will find our group’s first draft of our white paper. It took a lot of hard work and time, but we feel that it is a strong first draft. However, I am sure like everything else in life there is room for improvement. Probably more than we even realize seeing how it is our first draft. So please feel free to as brutally honest as possible to help us improve upon our document. Our audience is software companies who are looking for a solution to the problems they have been unintentionally been releasing within their software. At this time we do not have specific plans for further development, but I am sure after some help from peer evaluation we will be given some guidance.

Attachment:Microsoft Word - Draft 2~~What's in the World of Online Games.pdf (94.19 KB)

Attached you will find draft two of our white paper on online gaming. Draft two of our white paper has been through many changes since our last submission. During this revision, my group and I have not only cut the amount of our original word, but we have also added to the content. To the text, we have brought the open source element to our paper in order to meet the requirements of the assignment. Next, we worked on showing our specific position in this white paper. We accomplished this through the discussion and analysis we have added to the paper. We thought that our position was clear but after reading Professor Clark’s comments, we realized we really needed to show it and not just assume the audience knew where we stood through the information we presented. I would like to thank everyone who evaluated our paper. My group and I feel that all the comments helped to improve our original paper and we are very happy this new draft that we are turning in.

P.S. Also below is an updated description of our project.

Description:

The project we will be dealing with is regarding on-line gaming and how it can be benefited by using open source. On-line gaming has a wide spectrum of users across the globe. Many companies could add to their program if they take advantage of the technology of open source during testing. We plan to discuss this benefit and show a way around problem companies have with this method of testing. We hope to show how it will produce a positive outcome for many companies. This paper would be of interest to not only companies but to online gamers who want to know what is being done to solve the problem in the games they love.

Okay. Try 3. I still can not get the file I need to attach to open so I am going to try and attach it as a doc. I hope this works. If not I will be contacting Professor Clark. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience. Hopefully, it goes through better this way.

I really enjoyed reading your white paper! As to the structure of your paper I thought you guys did a great job of picking the light blue color as well as the little information boxes. I also thought you picked a great order to structure your sections. I feel that even though the history part was very enjoyable it might not be the most effective for writing towards companies. When you reduce your paper maybe you would consider either making that part shorter or eliminate it altogether. Otherwise for the type of audience your white paper is aiming at I thought that your choice of words and concepts was perfect. Overall I thought your group did a great job writing this white paper and best of luck to you as you continue to revise on your way to a final draft.

Thanks for the feedback. I hadn't thought about the history section being ineffective. You bring forth a good point with slimming it down or considering losing it altogether. Thanks again! Good luck to you also!

Thanks! I am glad you thought that the information was relevant to our audience. Some of the other students thought that maybe we were totally of the mark and we will be discussing the whole issue at our next meeting. As far as the history, we thought that it was important to show the history in order to show how the problem was created. We also thought it was important to show we were educated in this area to build creditability and ethos with our audience. However, maybe we went into to much detail and could easily fix the problem by choosing only the most important information. This would also help us to meet the requirements of the next rough draft. Thanks for the suggestions and I am sure that they will be helpful to our next revisions. My group and I appreciate it!!!

I woudl have to totally agree with amy on her review. Your paper was very good and caught my interest. If you follow those ideas and comments you should be good. I really like the summary boxs used in your project is spaces it out and adds to the length of it. My groups should so something like that. I wanted to wish you guys best of luck so far and you have done a great job.

First of all I’d like to say that your white paper was more interesting than I thought it was going to be. I am not into the whole gaming thing but I’m glad that I chose to review this one. It had a lot of information that I was unaware of.
I really liked your intro. It got my attention and made me want to keep reading past it. That is one thing that made me chose to read through this one. The little story that went along with it was a great idea.
I also liked your bulleted lists in the blue boxes that you had within a few paragraphs of the paper. That is a good idea as well. It gives a little caption of what information was important in that section. This gives the reader another chance to see the main facts that you are trying to get across to them.
The one thing that stuck out at me the most as far as questionable stuff goes is that if your audience is software companies that have been having troubles…wouldn’t they already know the main history and the reason for the expansion of online gaming? I know that this was helpful to me but I am not a software company. So I am not sure if that audience would be interested in that part of your paper…

But for me, I thought that it was good. That was the only thing that stuck out at me.

I'm glad you enjoyed the paper. I was afraid not many would find it interesting. We had a similar comment about the history section. I agree that software companies should already know the history; so, maybe slimming it down ALOT would be more suitable.

Great point about our audience and it was one that we should have realized ourselves. We just thought the information was relevant in order to build ethos with our audience. However, maybe we should reevaluate our audience and try to target a little different group. I will further discuss this issue with my group at our next meeting and thanks for bringing it to our attention!!!
