Welcome to English 420E!

Welcome to English 420E: Business Writing for entrepreneurs, an options course for the Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, offered through the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Purdue University.

Instructor Introduction

My name is John M. Spartz, and I am an instructor of English 420E, 420, and 227, courses all related to my PhD in English Language and Linguistics, which I received here at Purdue University. My areas of research [mainly] focus on variationist sociolinguistics, and applying mixed-methodologies to linguistic issues of North American English. Further, I am interested in the intersection between linguistics and rhetorical theory, as applied to both a professional writing context and professional writing pedagogy.

E-mail Etiquette

The way that you approach sending e-mails (planning, drafting, composing, sending, responding, etc.) says as much about your professional ethos as any other communicative act in the business world. Although you are already most likely aware of these general e-mail guidelines, it is always good professional practice to review the standards of a particular professional community or culture. To ensure your understanding of these principles, e-mails in this course that do not follow these guidelines will henceforth be returned unanswered.
