Introductions

Welcome to English 680S!

So that we can get to know each other a little better, please post a reply to this message in which you

  • describe where you are from
  • give your course of study and year in the graduate program
  • talk about your areas of specialization and career goals
  • tell what you would like to get out of this course
  • share at least one thing personal about yourself (a hobby, your favorite sport, a favorite activity, etc.)

I'll start. I've lived in West Lafayette since 2000, when I first came to Purdue. I was promoted to full professor in 2006. My areas of specialization include professional writing, rhetorical theory, digital media, print publishing, and film. In 2002 I founded Parlor Press, an independent scholarly publisher. I'm also involved with Purdue's Entrepreneurial Leadership Academy, a program of the Burton Morgan Center in Discovery Park.

My favorite sports are golf and baseball, but I spend most of my free time playing with new gadgets, including my twins.

Me!

Hey All! I am from Colorado... currently flooding with democrats and such. My parents live in Golden, which is not only where Buffalo Bill is buried, but also where Coors is housed. Huzzah! I have been here in Lafayette for two full years, and am starting my third year in Rhetoric and Composition. Hopefully I will get to be doing fun creative new media tasks in my academic life, which is part of why I am doing yet another computer-y class. Right now I am also belly dancing in town, do yoga, and want to learn to make lace (which is strange... but I think would be arcane cool).

Kristen is...

Hi everyone. I'm Kristen. I grew up in St. Louis, MO, but have moved around the Midwest--from IL to OH to IN. I've been here for a year now, and am not sure if I can fairly call myself a specialist in anything. I enjoy thinking about multiple literacies and digital rhetorics (along with the pedagogies that emphasize them), and I'm interested in research methodology and methods. I'm in this course to learn more by doing more. I teach aerobics at the Rec and am an avid musical-watcher.

Hola!

Hi, Karen here. I'm from Akron, Ohio and Jacksonville, Florida. This is the third year of my quest for a PhD in Rhet/Comp with foci in professional writing and new media. I'm hoping to pick up Flash and CSS skills here. I'm crafty. By that I mean I enjoy painting, photography, sewing, jewelry making.

About: me

Hey all- This is Ehren. I'm originally from Pittsburgh, but have lived more recently in Cleveland. I'm a second-year student in the Rhetoric and Composition program and I have secondary areas in Rhetoric, Technology and Digital Writing and Theory and Cultural Studies. I've always been interested in authorship and intellectual property issues, cultural studies, and critical discourse analysis, but have recently been cultivating an interest in technical writing theory. I like to homebrew and I'm a huge fan of motorsports where vehicles make both left- and right-hand turns.

Intro Time!

Howdy, my name is Mark Pepper and I'm originally from Sacramento, California. I'm a third year Phd student in Rhetoric and Composition with specializations in culture studies, digital rhetoric, and public rhetoric. More specifically, I focus on popular culture and network theory and my career goal is to be the guy that cable TV news shows go to when they need a talking-head academic to pontificate about pop culture. I'd like this course to end with my having produced some sort of publishable/digital document or actually finishing any number of projects I have lying around in half-finished forms.

Strikes and Gutters

Please allow me to introduce myself as, well, myself. I am originally from Flint MI, but more recently I was living down in (hot)Alanta GA. This is my second year here at Purdue and I am a Ph.D. student in the Rhetoric and Composition program. Most of my interest revolve around digital media/digital rhetoric and Web 2.0 technologies. My goal this semester is to keep increasing my skill sets in digital production and continue exploring how people are impacted by and in return impact technology. My future plans include keeping my head above water and hopefully landing a kick @$$ job teaching digital technologies. As you may have noticed I am a big fan of The Big Lebowski .
Well, dude, sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.

Biography

Hello all! I'm Josh Prenosil. I was born in Omaha, NE, but I've lived all over since I was old enough to buy cigarettes. These places include: St. Louis, South Bend, Dallas, Madrid, and now West Lafayette. I'm in my second year in the R/C program, and I'm narrowing my focus down to public rhetorics, professional writing, and (possibly) ESL. In this course, I would like to learn to create 3D representations of otherwise inaccessible theory. I'm also interested in book cover and slogan design. After I graduate, I would like to work in a Big Ten University, or perhaps in a smaller university that has an emphasis on service learning and teaching... Now that I look at what I've just written, I see that my two goals are incommensurable... (Perhaps there's a happy medium in-between?) All of my hobbies have a low start-up cost but require active engagement for measurable progress: Tae Kwon Do, beer brewing, carpentry, and my newest hobby: moped repair.
