There's a lesson here...

I beat Ayiti using the strategy that someone's (I can't recall whose) student came up with - volunteerism.

It should be a bit embarrassing to us that we failed to analyze the author of our "text" and realize their likely message.

Also, I've started reading The Diamond Age again. I'd almost forgotten how amazing that book is.

Finally, take a look at Anda's Game for a really great short story about avatars and gold farming.

My rhetorical training don't mean @#%$!

Nick,

I have played that game for probably 100 hours at this point and have never--not once--had any of my characters volunteer during a season. I feel like a failure, as you wrote, in "failing to analyze the author of our "text" and realize their likely message." I'm off to give it a try.

Yay!!!

You're totally right! I had one of my characters volunteer each season, and I got farther in the game than I ever have before. Those sneaky Unicefers...
