So I got a chance to join the multiplayer beta for Crysis (which I took) and it is quite an experience. To say that it's pretty would be an understatement, and the gameplay is sublime. What's most impressive to me, though, is the conceptualization of the interface.
There's one feature that popped out to me in the context of what we've been talking about - the heads-up display. Most games marginalize the HUD, just putting it on the screen and letting the player take it somewhat for granted. Crysis, on the other hand, creates the fiction that your HUD is actually a function of your armor-suit thingy, and backs it up in the game. For example, a near-miss from one of the weapons will scramble your HUD in realistic fashion. (I initially thought my computer was crashing.) This technique has been used in the past, in the Mechwarrior games, most memorably, but Crysis is the first to induce genuine panic when this crucial information is suddenly taken away. I wish I could find an image that shows the HUD scramble, but you'll just have to play it.
