in understanding new media, marshall mcluhan discusses hot/cold media...those which are close to us and those which are separate from us...do we think of our media in these terms? will it help us better understand new media?

"mechanical bride..."
"gutenburg galaxy"

the shift from message to massage...how does the message change because of the technological error--?

wilson bryan key: a colleague of mcluhan? studied subliminal messages--how are the two connected? tom suggests key took mcluhan's discussion of the subtlety of persuasion to "the next level..."

fragmentation--piecing it together--how do the fragments work together, how do they inform one another?
movement from oral to literate culture...postliteracy? postliteracy cultures (stephen king on harry potter)

postliteracy: you move beyond the need for written language; technology has advanced to the point where you don't have to be literate to communicate or understand reality.

does mcluhan leave out the access issues concerned with technology? morgan says, if /we're/ behind, what about those who don't live in the US, who live in a 3rd world country? the economics..."the fake news" only possible in this technological world. fast food--use visuals, go from bigmacw/fries, to bigmac meal, to #2, now are we going to simply grunt to order?

socrates--pull myself away from my laptop. memory...? what's happened to our retrieval ability--jeff: academic conference...internet hunt conference. 100 questions in 30 seconds--how do we access information?
i don't want to trust it too much--
economic issues, too

optimism. 2 paragraphs. page 12. ??? who gets left out isn't left out?

talk back to the propoganda--youtube, blogger, etc...blogging as a stand-in for action.
