My Students Rock!

I do so love my students' creativity and ability when they're set free to tackle new media projects about almost any topic they want. And if there was ever a captive audience of other people who would appreciate their work, it's ya'll. So I'm gonna toot their own horns for them. These are two responses to my recent music video assignment. Assignment simple: "make a music video refuting a stereotype you percieve people to have about your generation." Not much further instruction. And with cool results like these, why would I mess with it by giving more limitations?

Blue Eyed post revisited by a Hazel Eyed girl

A while back Lars posted something that caught my attention (okay, just to clarify, Lars, many of your post are interesting to me) that I want to prioritize again. Why? Because I know that we are all incredibly busy and (well, at least in my case) we might have decided we wanted to read it, but didn't get to it until later (like today).

i've been taking wendy's cue and finding the things that inspire me...this is one. i'm terribly interested in alberto giacometti, a fabulous sculptor. here's a link to a multimedia artpiece that i found really interesting. it links him to suu kyi...

http://www.locusnovus.com/lnprojects/suuandgiacometti/

i'd love for this blog space to be a place to share things that inspire us...one of the things i love the most about the field we're in is that the things we find inspirational can almost always become part of our scholarship....

Play Games to Win Rice for Hungry People? So says BBCnews.

Today on BBC news, I read an article about a word game that donates rice to the United Nations World Food Program when you play (and "win"). It's touted as "learn vocab while feeding people." For ever word definition you get correct the site donates 10 grains of rice and you can earn as much as you want/can. It's supported by advertising but a creation of Poverty.com and also has ties to the One Campaign .

thinking multimodally

because i'm a multimodal learner--i like to map things out and draw pictures and create using kinesthetic modes--i've always imagined that i'm adept in various modes. but as i've been trying to pin down a presentation format for this class project, i've realized how tied i am to language--how easy it is for me to imagine communicating my ideas in a paper that flows linearly from beginning to end.

Main Points of What is Web 2.0?

the value of the software is proportional to the scale and dynamism of the data it helps to manage
Below are the main lessons and features of Web 2.0 from the O'Reilly piece.

- leverage customer-self service and algorithmic data management to reach out to the entire web, to the edges and not just the center, to the long tail and not just the head

- the service automatically gets better the more people use it

- they have embraced the power of the web to harness collective intelligence

- Data is the Next Intel Inside

- End of the Software Release Cycle

CFP: Acadmics in Virtual Environments

Innovate, published as a public service by the Fischler School of Education
and Human Services and sponsored, in part, by Microsoft is soliciting
manuscripts for a special issue on academics in virtual environments. This
issue focuses on the use of Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) as an
enhancement to K-21 education. A MUVE combines graphics and audio with the
ability to communicate with multiple users in real time within the context
of a 3-D virtual environment. MUVEs are not necessarily considered games,

Transliteracy

I am presenting at a local art gallery tonight with Sue Thomas (of the trAce online writing project and De Montfort University in the UK) and we have been having some fascinating talks about transliteracy.
