English 420: Business Writing

Unfortunately for the first blog I had missed Tuesday’s class where groups were assigned, due to sickness and was out for most of the week. But after finding my group we discussed what we wanted to achieve from this project and who we would want to work with. Our favorite choice was working with an up and coming Karaoke bar that will be in Wabash Landing over in the Levee. I really like this choice because I believe this kind of establishment would have a good reaction with the Purdue students since there isn’t anything like this in the area.

In this first week of working on our new project, we got new groups and discussed what we were going to do. We did not meet up anywhere because we figured there was no need to. All we did was communicate through email and each of us was to call one to two companies to see if any of them would like for us to help them create a public document for them. I talked in person with AeroCommodities and Lafayette Instrument company. Both were willing to assist us in this project.

This week it was fun getting new groups in class for our new project. I am excited to begin working on this new project because I think I will become very interested in the organization we decide to choose. In class we thought of four companies and decided to each call one companies and gather information about them and then get together on Friday at 2:30 to combine all of our information and choose one company to do our project on.

This week our team couldn't meet because of time conflicts. However, each of us did our part in contacting the organizations that we want to take on as our project. I personally contacted the Great Harvest Bread and asked if they could talk to us about it. I am still waiting on the reply from them.

This week our group got together and decided what businesses or groups we would like to focus on for of Client Based Project. Since we each had our own ideas, it was a bit difficult narrowing down to which one we for sure wanted to work with, but we were able to agree on a good company and for good reasons. The company we chose was Sports Etc. We decided that this was going to be the best company to work with because after talking to the owner, Kayla said that he was very interested, and that he had worked with other Purdue students.

Samantha, Brandy, Tyler, and I met together for the first time on Tuesday in class. The businesses we are interested in are all distinct: a flowershop, a clothing boutique, a tailor, and a stationery boutique. During class, we finished our memo and turned in our copy to Mr. Baker. Upon our first meeting, I was happy to see that all of the group members had already had initial contact with the companies they were interested in, and many of the businesses provided positive feedback.

During this week we got assigned our new groups. During class, Phil and I were the only members of our group there, because the other one was absent. Since we needed to get an idea of what we wanted to accomplish for this and what client we wanted to work for, Phil and I started and finished the 100 word memo. In it we described two possible local businesses that we thought we could help. Since there was only Phil and I in class, we discussed the possibilities for the documents we could produce for them.

In class on Tuesday I met my new group in which consists of Kyle, Kelly, and Kayla. I am eager to work with them to finish off the rest of the semester because I feel that we initially bonded well and we have a lot of great ideas. Durning the class period on Tuesday we took advantage of our time by exchanging ideas to one another and discussing each of them. Kayla's idea consisted of working with a local Sports store. I shared my idea of working with Hungry's and providing advertisements for their new delivery program.

My group and I met for the first time this week for our client-based project. We were informed of our group members in class on Tuesday and spent most of the class getting to know one another. Our group consists of three others and me. One of the other three was in my group for the previous project. Along with getting to know each other on Tuesday, we also narrowed the prospects for our project down to a specific category of small businesses.

My new group consists of Jenn, Clayton and Stephen. During the provided time in class on Tuesday, we discussed different choices for the business we will select. Jen, Clayton and Stephen all wrote about coffee houses in their discussion boards. I wrote about a yoga shop. Seeing as I was the clear minority, we went with the coffee houses. I am a dedicated Starbucks customer and have no experience with other coffee shops on campus, but my group seemed to know of plenty. All three of my other group members wrote about Vienna and Skylight.
