Progress Report 1 - 022

Koenig_Progress Report 1(Late)_022

This week we brainstormed about potential problems and solutions for our white paper. We also agreed to meet on Wednesday the 7th and we did. As I informed the group, I had another meeting and therefore couldn't help but be late for this meeting. After we talked to Mr. Baker I offered to write down the new solution in the proposal that would replace one of the old ones that was rejected and send it to the rest of the group for further discussion.

During this past week my group and I met once on Wednesday October 7th at 6:00 PM. The meeting lasted until 9:00 PM. The purpose of this meeting was to create a proposal for our white paper project. Everyone was in attendance for this meeting at some point in time. Sara Hinck and Emily Allison were in attendance for the entire meeting. I was in attendance for all but ten minutes of the meeting when I had to leave to attend another meeting in my residence hall for my job as a resident assistant.

During the previous week my group and I met outside of class to draft our proposal. We discussed in great detail all of the problems of Purdue Recreational Sports and their possible solutions. We have set up meeting dates for the next several weeks in order to continue to research and share ideas. I think that the meetings outside of class really give us a chance to open up and gain new insights on the problem.

Over the past week our group brainstormed problems pertaining to Sports and Recreation here at Purdue. We got together and planned a meeting time and and place as well as exchanged contact information to be able to stay in complete communication with one another. We discussed the fact that intramural sports here at Purdue are viewed with a sense of apathy and this is keeping many students from participating in sports which may have been a large part of their lives in a previous time.

This past week communication between team members and meetings was key for our group to finish our proposal on time. We decided that the safety of Purdue students was going to be basis around our proposal. In the past few months their have been multiple attacks on campus and we wanted our white paper to propose solutions to this unsettling problem. While making the white paper on Wednesday afternoon our group soon realized it would be a lot easier to make an outline of what was needed to be done and then evenly split each task to different group members.

For our White Paper Project, we decided to analyze pedestrian safety and how it could be improved by implementing new design features. In light of the recent incident at Indiana University which resulted in the death of a student by a student driver, we felt that the implementation of permanent design features to prevent accidents would be beneficial to the Purdue community.

Within the first week of the White Paper Project my group has identified a problem on Purdue's campus involving student health and safety. A problem we identified and chose to pursue further for this project was the crime rate at campus (especially this semester). Personal experiences and social networking also had an influence in this choice. Together as a group we were able to brainstorm several possible solutions.

Our group decided to address the problem with the availability with PUSH hours. While our problem along with our proposals are rough, we have a solid idea on what we are doing.

Throughout the project I helped manage meeting times and places in addition to writing the three proposals for our group. During our group meeting I collaborated with my team members by brainstorming different problems with PUSH.

Allison-Progress Report 1-022

Our group decided to do a white paper presentation about the quality of life for students. The general topic was fairly broad and encompassed many categories. In class, we brainstormed about different topics that could relate to this issue, and we decided to narrow the overall problem to student safety and security, specifically when alcohol is involved.

For our proposal, we decided to discuss the current issue at the Purdue University Health Center of inadequate hours. We decided the hours were not condusive to those who have class on or after 4:30 or had other jobs. They also don't cater well to those who play intermurals or who become sick from the current H1N1 situation. We thought that proposing extended or varied hours for both the main health center as well as the Urgent Care would alleviate these issues.
